2009 BMW X5 SUV Review from Edmunds.com

Edmunds.com7.9/10
Overall Rating

What Edmunds.com says...

In the luxury crossover SUV segment, the 2009 BMW X5 sets the standard for handling and performance. In terms of value and utility, however, many competitors are better.

Pros

Nimble handling, powerful engines, luxurious and comfortable interior, huge list of features, excellent iPod interface.

Cons

Ride is on the firm side for some, munchkin-sized third-row seat, hefty price, frustrating iDrive interface.

What's new

A new twin-turbo diesel engine debuts on the 2009 BMW X5, which promises robust power and enhanced fuel economy. Optional and standard equipment has been adjusted throughout the X5 lineup, as have the trim level names.

Editor's Rating Score
Overall
7.9/10
The X5's third-row is nearly worthless as a seat, deletes the spare tire, and adds stiff run-flat tires. More so than the smooth, but slightly underpowered six-cylinder engine, the V8 engine remains the appropriate motivating force. An available diesel engine for 2009 offers a competent alternative, however. The X5 is still rewarding to drive, but the X5, in general, is beginning to feel more and more like the proverbial answer to a question nobody is asking.

Dynamics
Available with either a six- or eight-cylinder engine (both naturally aspirated), the X5 is ever the smooth operator. The V8 (350 hp) is surprisingly quick, and the inline-6 (260 hp) is a little overtaxed by the 5,000-pound vehicle. (Too bad the 300-hp twin-turbo-six didn't make the cut.) Both engines are mated to the same, mind-reading six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Steering is sometimes heavy, and outright handling is favored over a smooth ride, especially with the optional Sport package. The addition of a turbo diesel engine for 2009 offers further variation. Towing capacity is 6,000 pounds regardless of engine choice.

Comfort
So long as the road ahead is smooth, so, too, will be the ride. Wind noise is hushed with the exception of optional roof rails that can create some turbulence. Seat comfort is outstanding for the first two rows (with or without optional seating upgrades), but the third row is virtually useless, difficult to deploy and access, plus this $1,200 option deletes the spare tire and adds harsh-riding run-flat tires.

Function
BMW doesn't forget about the details. The X5's interior is mostly a lesson in "how to do it right." Thoughtful/useful touches abound from clever/ample storage to options like a backup camera and rear-seat entertainment. The controversial-yet-trend-setting iDrive controller remains at the intersection of functionality and frustration, however. Cargo volume has been increased to a respectable amount this year.

Design/Build Quality
No matter where you direct your magnifying glass, the X5 reveals quality and above-average execution. From the exterior design and paint to the interior materials and assembly, BMW knows how to screw a vehicle together like few other manufacturers do.
