2009 Toyota Highlander SUV Review from Edmunds.com

Edmunds.com7.9/10
Overall Rating

What Edmunds.com says...

With plenty of room, power and features, the 2009 Toyota Highlander is optimized for family use. If you're shopping for a midsize crossover SUV, make sure you try this Toyota.

Pros

Powerful yet fuel-efficient V6, easy to maneuver for its size, user-friendly cabin design with reconfigurable second-row seats and a fully usable third row.

Cons

Third-row seat folds as a single unit rather than in 50/50 sections.

What's new

Toyota offers a four-cylinder version of the Highlander for 2009, but only on the base two-wheel-drive version of this popular crossover.

Editor's Rating Score
Overall

An excellent overall package, the Toyota Highlander is comfortable and easy to drive, with expandable cargo space to handle everyday family needs.

Dynamics
Handling and steering are sound, but not sporty. Engine performance and fuel economy are slightly above the class average. A 4-cylinder version is available.

Comfort
Occupants will find the seats comfortable and the ride smooth and quiet.

Function
Versions without the navigation system have excellent ergonomics and control logic. Opting for the navigation system doesn't spoil the audio controls, and only minimally impacts the HVAC system. A third-row seat is available, but is tight for adults and eats up all of the cargo space when in use.

Design/Build Quality
At best, Highlander styling can be characterized as "conservative." It has an inviting interior design, however, but beware the excessive use of too-shiny fake wood that mars some trim levels.

Detailed Profile

  • Family Friendly Car-based SUV with comfortable room for four passengers.
  • Cargo Hauler Rear seats fold to increase capacity.
