Gaspar Noé is an Argentine filmmaker and the son of Argentine painter and intellectual Luis Felipe Noé. He graduated from Louis Lumière College and is the visiting professor of film at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Three of his films feature the character of... a nameless butcher played by Philippe Nahon: Carne, I Stand Alone and, in a cameo, Irréversible. Carne was the recipient of the Critic's Award at the 5th Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival in February 1994. The films of Stanley Kubrick are one source of inspiration for Noé, and he occasionally makes references to them in his own works. Noé also cites the 1983 Austrian serial killer film Angst, by Gerald Kargl, as a major influence. He is married to filmmaker Lucile Hadžihalilović. His work has been linked to the New French Extremity.

Juan Carlos Tabío is a Cuban film director and screenwriter. His film Strawberry and Chocolate , which he co-directed with Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, won a Silver Bear - Special Jury Prize at the 44th Berlin International Film Festival, and was also nominated for the Academy Award for... Best Foreign Language Film. He has collaborated with director and close friend Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and actors Jorge Perugorría, Vladimir Cruz and Mirta Ibarra in several films. His 2000 film, Lista de Espera, was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. Juan Carlos Tabío was born in 1942 in Havana, Cuba. Although his illustrious filmmaking career has spanned nearly 3 decades, his initial involvement in the genre came as an accident. When he was young, his parents prepared him for a career in politics. It was not until a family friend who worked for the national cinemagraphic society invited him to work on a film that Tabío gave filmmaking a thought as a career. Juan Carlos Tabío began working in 1961 at the ICAIC as a production assistant, then as assistant director.

Elia Suleiman , is a Palestinian film director and actor. He is best known for the 2002 film Divine Intervention , a modern tragic comedy on living under occupation in Palestine which won the Jury Prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. Elia Suleiman's cinematic style is often compared to that of... Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton, for its poetic interplay between "burlesque and sobriety". Between 1982–1993, Suleiman lived in New York City, where he co-directed: Introduction to the End of an Argument and directed Homage by Assassination, that both won numerous awards. An experimental video film, co-directed by Jayce Salloum, Introduction to the End of an Argument critiqued the portrayal of Arabs in Western media and its effect on foreign policy by juxtaposing clips from Hollywood films, television broadcasts and cartoons with live scenes from the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. Homage by Assassination is a "diary film" that critiques the 1991 Gulf War via the juxtaposition of multilayered personal anecdotes and identity.

Benicio del Toro was born in San German, on the southwest side of the island of Puerto Rico, and grew up in Santurce, a district of San Juan. He is the son of Gustavo Adolfo del Toro Bermúdez and Fausta Genoveva Sánchez Rivera, who were both lawyers. He has an older brother, Gustavo, who was a pediatric oncologist at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He is of Spanish descent through a Catalan paternal great-grandfather and a Basque maternal great-grandmother, as well as of Italian and American ancestry. The family del Toro are of Sephardic origin.

He's also known for speaking about taboo subjects such incest, as portrayed in his recent film as a producer Géminis , which depicts a romantic relationship between brothers. His 2010 film Carancho was selected as the Argentine entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards, but it didn't make the final shortlist. His 2012 film White Elephant has been selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

Julio Medem is a Spanish writer and film director. Medem was born in San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain and showed an interest in movies since childhood, when he would take his father's Super 8 camera and shoot at night, while nobody was paying attention. After college graduation he worked... as a film critic and later as a screenwriter, assistant director and editor. After a few shorts he directed his first full length feature, Vacas for which he won a Goya Award. After this film he directed The Red Squirrel and Earth, both receiving good reviews at Cannes. In his next movie, Lovers of the Arctic Circle, which has been compared to the works of Krzysztof Kieślowski, he explored circular narrative and a taste for minimalistic textures that he then overcame in his next film, Sex and Lucia, where the plot dissolves into a very lyrical eroticism. After this film he took a tangent from his style to direct and produce La pelota vasca , a documentary film about the political problems of the Basque Country, which caused a furor amongst victims of terrorism.
