A Midsummer Night's Dream is a 1999 American film adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same name, directed by Michael Hoffman. It is the fifth major cinematic adaptation of the play, following the 1909 silent film , the Academy Award-winning 1935 film , the 1959 Czech animation , and the 1968 British film . In Monte Athena, Italy, young lovers Lysander and Hermia elope into the forest... to escape the strict instructions from Hermia's father that she must be betrothed to Demetrius , another young man who loves her. Demetrius follows them, having been made aware of the plan by Helena , a young woman who is desperately in love with him. Once in the forest, they wander into the fairy world, ruled by King Oberon and Queen Titania , two sparring local deities.
