Altoona

The Mishler Theatre is a Beaux-Arts stage and movie theater located at 1208 Twelfth Avenue in Altoona, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Albert E.... Westover and built by local theatre owner and manager Isaac Charles Mishler and opened on February 15, 1906. Nine months later, the neighboring Rothert building caught fire, which quickly spread to the theater, destroying the interior. The theater was rebuilt and re-opened in 1907. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and is located in the Downtown Altoona Historic District. After disuse in the mid-20th century, the theatre was considered for demolition in 1965. In response, the Altoona Community Theatre and the Blair County Arts Foundation purchased it and began renovation. The theatre reopened in 1969 for a performance of The Sound of Music. Early renovation included replacement of the seats and the lobby's chandelier, the new one purchased in 1970 at a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer auction. Major structural, plumbing, and electrical work began in the early 1990s. At the most recent estimate, the restoration has cost approximately 1.8 million dollars.

Janet Blair was an American film and television actress. Born as Martha Jane Lafferty in Altoona, Pennsylvania, she began her acting career on film... in 1942, being placed under contract to Columbia Pictures. During World War II, she made a string of successful pictures, although she is today best remembered for playing Rosalind Russell's sister in My Sister Eileen and Rita Hayworth's best friend in Tonight and Every Night . In the late 1940s, she was dropped by Columbia and did not return to pictures for several years. Instead, she took the lead role of Nellie Forbush in a production of the stage musical South Pacific, making more than 1,200 performances in three years. "[I] never missed a performance", she noted proudly. During the tour, she also got married to second husband, producer-director Nick Mayo, and they became parents of Amanda and Andrew. She appeared on television on various variety shows and was also a summer replacement for Dinah Shore. She recorded an album entitled Flame Out for the Dico label.

Andrew Kevin Walker is an American BAFTA-nominated screenwriter. He is known for having written Seven , for which he earned a nomination for the... BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay, as well as several other films, including 8mm , Sleepy Hollow and many uncredited script rewrites. Walker was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, though some time during his childhood, he moved to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, where he was raised. He attended the Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School until his graduation in 1982. Walker soon enrolled in Penn State University to pursue a career in film production. He graduated from Penn State in 1986, with a Bachelor of Arts in film and video. Shortly after completing his education, he moved to New York City and began a career in retail at Tower Records. During that time, he worked on several projects, but Walker was unable to find much success until 1991, when he completed the script for Seven. Walker decided to move to Los Angeles to sell his screenplay. There, he personally contacted screenwriter David Koepp, who showed the script to executives at New Line Cinema, who ended up purchasing the rights to it.

David Brookman Smith , known professionally as D. Brooks Smith, is a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Smith... was nominated to the Third Circuit by President George W. Bush on September 10, 2001 to fill a seat vacated by Judge Timothy K. Lewis. The U.S. Senate confirmed his nomination on July 31, 2002 by a vote of 64-35. Previously, Smith served as the Chief Judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and as a Commonwealth prosecutor. Smith was appointed to that court in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan, where he served until his elevation to the Third Circuit. Smith received a B.A. from Franklin and Marshall College in 1973, and a J.D. from Penn State Dickinson School of Law in 1976.

Michael Barry "Mike" Reid is a retired professional American football defensive lineman, as well as a country music artist and composer. After... several years playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, Reid retired from football and began his musical career, co-writing several hit singles for country music artists, including Ronnie Milsap's "Stranger in My House", which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1984. Reid later began a solo recording career, releasing two studio albums for Columbia Records. He charted seven singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts as a singer, including the Number One hit "Walk on Faith." In his senior year , the tackle spearheaded Penn State on defense with 89 tackles and was a unanimous All-America choice and All-East selection. He also finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from Penn State in 1969. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987 and received the Walter Camp “Alumnus of the Year” award in 1987. In 1995, he received the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award.

Paul Winter is an American saxophonist , and is a six-time Grammy Award nominee. Paul Winter attended Altoona Area High School and graduated in... 1957. In 1961, while he was in college at Northwestern University, the band that he founded, the Paul Winter Sextet, won the Intercollegiate Jazz Festival and was signed by Columbia Records. The next year, the band toured Latin America as cultural ambassadors for the United States State Department, playing 160 concerts in 23 countries. The Sextet was also the first jazz band to perform at the White House. Winter returned to Brazil in the mid-1960s and his interest in Brazilian music and the emerging bossa nova led to the 1965 release of the album Rio, with liner notes by Vinicius de Moraes. After Winter's band changed its name to the Paul Winter Consort in the late 1960s, it contributed to the development of world music and space music. The Consort's 1972 release, Icarus, was produced by George Martin. Most of the musicians who worked on this album went on to form the jazz group Oregon. The Consort has continued over the years with different musicians.
