American University Washington College of Law is the law school of American University. It is located on Massachusetts Avenue in the Spring Valley... neighborhood of northwest Washington. WCL is ranked 49th among law schools by U.S. News & World Report. The school is accredited by the American Bar Association. WCL was founded in 1896 by Ellen Spencer Mussey and Emma Gillett in response to a lack of legal educational opportunities for women in the region. Mussey herself learned the law by apprenticeship at her husband's law offices. She was rejected by several schools in the area, including the National University School of Law, which later merged into the George Washington University Law School, because "women did not have the mentality for the law." Gillette however, found admission at Howard University School of Law, and graduated in 1883. She passed the bar in the District of Columbia the same year. Additionally, she became first woman to be appointed notary public by the President of the United States. Mussey and Gillett began teaching in Mussey's law offices after they were approached by three women who wished to study with them.

Barry Levinson is an American screenwriter, film director, actor, and producer of film and television. His most notable films include Good Morning,... Vietnam, Rain Man, Bugsy, Sleepers and Wag the Dog. Levinson was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Violet "Vi" and Irvin Levinson, who worked in the furniture and appliance business. His family is of Russian Jewish descent. After growing up in Baltimore and graduating from Forest Park Senior High School, Levinson attended Baltimore City Community College, and American University in Washington, D.C. at the American University School of Communication, before moving to Los Angeles to work as an actor and writer. Levinson at one time shared an apartment with would-be drug smuggler George Jung. Levinson's first writing work was for variety shows such as The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine, The Lohman and Barkley Show, The Tim Conway Show, and The Carol Burnett Show.

Ernest Thompson is an American writer, actor, and director. Thompson was born as Richard Ernest Thompson in Bellows Falls, Vermont. He spent his... early years in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, moving to Maryland as a junior high school student. He attended the University of Maryland and The Catholic University of America, graduating cum laude from American University in 1971. Thompson is known as the author of the play On Golden Pond, which he wrote at the age of twenty-eight. The play opened off-off-Broadway in 1978, starring Tom Aldredge and Frances Sternhagen. A great success at the Kennedy Center, it opened at the New Apollo Theater on Broadway February 28, 1979. Revived the following season at the Century Theatre, On Golden Pond ran for more than 400 performances. It went on to become a hit 1981 film starring Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda. Thompson won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1982, as well as awards from the Golden Globes and the Writers Guild of America. Thompson’s second popular play, The West Side Waltz, opened on Broadway starring Katharine Hepburn on November 19, 1981.

Through her father, Hawn is a direct descendant of Edward Rutledge, the youngest signatory of the Declaration of Independence. Hawn was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she went to Montgomery Blair High School. Her father was Presbyterian and her mother was Jewish, the daughter of immigrants from Hungary; Hawn had a Jewish upbringing.
