Asbury Park

Asbury Park Convention Hall is a 3,600-seat indoor exhibition center located on the boardwalk and on the beach in Asbury Park, New Jersey. It was... built between 1928 and 1930 and is used for sports, concerts and other special events. Adjacent to the Convention Hall is the Paramount Theatre; both are connected by a Grand Arcade. Both structures are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1916, Asbury Park Mayor Clarence E.F. Hetrick hired famed architectural firm McKim, Mead and White to design a convention center for the block just north of the city's Atlantic Square, between 6th and Sunset Avenues. The firm submitted a plan that called for a 5000-seat venue costing $75,000 to construct. However, city founder James A. Bradley owned the block in question, then home to the aging Asbury Park Auditorium, and refused to sell the plot to the city. After Bradley's death in 1921, department store scion Arthur Steinbach purchased the Auditorium property from Bradley's estate, demolished the auditorium, and constructed the Berkeley-Carteret Hotel on the plot.

Scott Charles Bigelow was an American professional wrestler, best known by the ring name Bam Bam Bigelow. His professional wrestling career spanned... twenty-one years. Bigelow had a distinctive flame tattoo that spanned most of his bald head and was known for being agile despite his size of nearly 400 pounds . Bigelow worked in major wrestling promotions, including the World Wrestling Federation , the original Extreme Championship Wrestling promotion, and World Championship Wrestling . He held multiple championships in both ECW and WCW, and thirteen throughout his career. Among other accolades, he was a former world champion, having held the ECW World Heavyweight Championship once, and a two-time WCW World Tag Team Champion. Although he never held any titles in the WWF, he main-evented multiple pay-per-views for the promotion, including WrestleMania XI. In early 1987, Bigelow wrestled in the Continental Wrestling Association, teaming with Jerry Lawler to feud with Austin Idol and Tommy Rich. In May 1987, he signed with the World Wrestling Federation .

Ed Manion , also known as Eddie "Kingfish" Manion, is an American saxophonist who plays both tenor and baritone sax. He is best known as a member of... Bruce Springsteen with The Seeger Sessions Band Tour later called Bruce Springsteen with The Sessions Band with the release of the CD/DVD Bruce Springsteen with The Sessions Band: Live in Dublin in 2006. He is an original member of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, The Miami Horns and Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul. As a Session Musician he has recorded, toured, and/or performed with, among others, Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, Diana Ross, Gary U.S. Bonds, Bon Jovi, Willy DeVille, Dave Edmunds, Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Darlene Love, Ronnie Spector, Dion, The Allman Brothers Band, Kim Wilson, Dion and Graham Parker. As a solo artist he released his own CD titled Follow Through in 2004. Manion attended Berklee College of Music after graduating from Lakewood High School in 1970 and as a youth played in several bar bands on the Jersey Shore.

Lenny Welch , is an American MOR/pop singer. He was born in New York City on May 31, 1938 . He was raised in Asbury Park, New Jersey. His biggest... hit, a cover version of the big band standard "Since I Fell for You," reached number 4 on U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. His other hits included "Ebb Tide" in 1964 that was featured in the film Sweet Bird of Youth. He also recorded the first vocal version of "A Taste of Honey" in 1962.

Arthur Willard Pryor was a trombone virtuoso, bandleader, and soloist with the Sousa Band. In later life, he was an American Democratic Party... politician from New Jersey, who served on the Monmouth County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders during the 1930s. Pryor was born on the second floor of the Lyceum Theater in Saint Joseph, Missouri. He first took up music at a very young age and was playing the valve trombone by age 11. By age 15 he had mastered the slide trombone and was awarded a spot in his father's band. He was hailed as a prodigy after this. Shifted to another band, Pryor went on to direct the Stanley Opera Company in Denver, Colorado until joining the John Philip Sousa Band in 1892. He played his first solo with the Sousa Band at age 22 during the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. During his 12 years with the Sousa Band, Pryor estimated that he played 10,000 solos. From 1895 to 1903 Pryor was assistant conductor of the Sousa Band. After leaving the Sousa Band, he formed his own band, which made its debut at the Majestic Theatre in New York City on November 15, 1903.

Diana "Mousie" Lewis was an American film actress and a MGM contract star. Born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Lewis began her film career in All the... King's Horses and worked steadily over the next few years, usually in minor roles. Her more notable films include It's a Gift , Gold Diggers in Paris , Go West and Johnny Eager . She was the love interest of Andy Hardy as Daphne Fowler in Andy Hardy Meets Debutante . She married Jay Raye on April 30, 1935 and they had 2 children, Jo and Belinda.They divorced on December 20, 1939.She met the actor William Powell in 1940, married after a courtship of three weeks and retired from acting in 1943. The couple remained together for forty-four years until Powell's death at age 92 in 1984. Lewis died from pancreatic cancer in Rancho Mirage, California, aged 77, and was interred at Cathedral City's Desert Memorial Park in Riverside County, California, alongside Powell, and her stepson, William David Powell. Lewis was an active supporter of women's golf and the LPGA. The LPGA's William and Mousie Powell Award is named in honor of the Powells.
