The Smith-McDowell House is located in Asheville, North Carolina. It is the city's first mansion and oldest surviving house, and the oldest brick... structure in Buncombe County. The house was constructed in 1840 for James McConnell Smith. His daughter Sarah Smith-McDowell bought the house after her parents died. It is a blend of architectural styles dating from its original 1840 construction and additions completed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The floor plan is typical of Adam style, better known as Federal style in America. It is a double-pile plan, Flemish bond, five-bay mansion that features a double-tier porch semi-engaged beneath an extension of its gable roof. Each three-bay end wall has a pair of interior chimneys. The brick walls are 12 to 20 inches thick. The original Federal character that dominated the house's exterior remains in the large fanlights above the front doors and in the delicacy of the front porch that is supported by twelve slender fluted columns . The house has corbelled cornices that feature dentils. The exterior of the building at one time displayed penciling, and remnants remain in several spots.

The Thomas Wolfe House, AKA the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, is a historic house and museum located at 52 N Market St. in Asheville, North Carolina, that... was the childhood home of author Thomas Wolfe . The two-story frame house was built in 1883, influenced by the Queen Anne Style of architecture. By 1906, when Wolfe's mother, Julia E. Wolfe , bought the house, it was a boarding house named Old Kentucky Home. She soon went to live at her business with Tom, while the other Wolfes remained at their Woodfin Street residence. Wolfe lived at the boarding house until he went to the University of North Carolina in 1916. Julia Wolfe enlarged the house in 1917, adding five rooms. Wolfe used the house as the setting for his first novel, Look Homeward, Angel . Changing the name of his mother's boarding house to "Dixieland" in his autobiographical fiction, he incorporated his own experiences among family, friends and boarders into the book. The Thomas Wolfe House was designated a National Historic Landmark on November 11, 1971.

She entered Howard University at the age of 15, making her one of the youngest students ever to enroll there.

Copeland was trained by former professional wrestlers Sweet Daddy Siki and Ron Hutchinson. Throughout the 1990s, he wrestled in North American independent promotions early in his career. He later formed the teen duo Kris Kross after meeting the boys at a local mall in 1991. Da Brat through Kris Kross, signed her to his label So So Def Recordings, and released her debut Funkdafied which went Platinum. His finances were not hindered by a distribution deal made with Columbia Records in 1993. In 1998, Jermaine Dupri surpassed all of his prior commercial ventures with his involvement in the release of Destiny's Child's eponymous debut album.

Jackie "Moms" Mabley, born Loretta Mary Aiken, was an American standup comedian and a pioneer of the so-called "Chitlin' Circuit" of... African-American vaudeville. Mabley was born into a family of twenty children in Brevard, North Carolina, in 1894. Her father, James P. Aiken, owned and operated several businesses, while her mother, Mary, kept house and took in boarders. Her father died an accidental death when she was eleven. In 1910, her mother took over their primary business, a general store. James Aiken's father, Henry Aiken, was a mulatto, meaning James P. Aiken was part white. His mother, Bettie, was able to read and write in the 1870 census, five years after the abolition of slavery, which suggests she may have been a free woman of color. Loretta Mabley's genealogist, D. Richmond, wrote: "She has a very interesting lineage worth researching," states Richmond. By the age of fifteen, Mabley had been raped twice and had two children who were given up for adoption. She was pressured by her stepfather to marry a much older man, but was encouraged by her grandmother to strike out on her own.

Shirley Ann Hemphill was an American stand-up comedian and actress. She was best known for her role on the television situation comedy What's... Happening!!, which ran from 1976 to 1979. Hemphill began her career as a stand-up comic but without much fanfare. In an effort to receive some notice, she decided to record some of her best routines on a borrowed cassette recorder and send the tape to comedian Flip Wilson who, at the time, was a major television star, enjoying the third season on his own TV variety show. Wilson enjoyed the tape and invited Hemphill to L.A. to attend a taping of his show. He also sent her a dozen roses for luck and her very own cassette recorder. After Hemphill returned home from the taping, she was determined to become a comedy star. She became a waitress at a fast food restaurant during the day and worked comedy clubs at night. In 1976, Hemphill's stand-up routine started to get noticed and was invited to guest star on the TV comedy sitcoms, All's Fair and Good Times.

He was named as one of the "Ten Actors to Watch" by Variety in 2007. In 2008, he made his directorial debut with the independent film Pretty Bird.
