Burgmann College is a residential college affiliated with the Australian National University in Canberra. Established in 1971, it is the only... Australian college to combine undergraduate accommodation with a substantial postgraduate student body. It houses 351 students, roughly one-third of whom are postgraduates. The college is named after Ernest H. Burgmann , the progressive Anglican Bishop whom Prime Minister Robert Menzies once described in Parliament as a "most meddlesome priest". Burgmann and neighbouring John XXIII College are the only remaining independent residential colleges among the Australian National University's ten halls of residence. Burgmann and John XXIII continue to administer their own admissions processes separate from the university's central clearinghouse for accommodation. A rivalry exists between Burgmann and the other residential halls and colleges, who participate in inter-hall sports and arts competition.

The Research School of Physics and Engineering was established with the creation of the Australian National University in 1947. Located at the... ANU's main campus in Canberra, the school is one of the four founding research schools in the ANU's Institute of Advanced Studies. As part of the Institute of Advanced Studies it is primarily a research school with limited interaction with the ANU's undergraduate students. With a total of around 200 employees the school has approximately 60 PhD students and 70 academic staff. The school is divided into separate research departments although PhD students can often be based in more than one department. RSPE is one of the leading physics research institutions in Australia. Major research facilities at the school include the 14UD NEC Pelletron accelerator and associated modular superconducting linac run by the Department of Nuclear Physics, the H-1NF flexible Stellarator Heliac run by the Plasma Research Laboratory plus an extensive range of smaller experimental and computational equipment. Research ranges from the fundamental to the applied, including both experimental and theoretical work.

The School of Music is a school within the Faculty of Arts of the Australian National University. It consists of four buildings, including the main... School of Music building - which contains Llewellyn Hall - and the Peter Karmel Building. The School of Music encompasses Brass, Composition, Ethnomusicology, Guitar, Jazz, Musicology, Percussion, String, Voice and Woodwind departments; the Keyboard Institute; and the Music Library. The School of Music was established under the name The Canberra School of Music in 1965 with Ernest Llewellyn as the founding Director. The original plans for the School were prepared in the 1960s when the Department of the Interior recognized the need to establish centres for art and music study in the national capital, with the vision of providing high-level performance and practice. Sir Richard Kingsland, Secretary of the Department from 1963 to 1970, provided valuable support for Ernest Llewellyn's vision. The Canberra School of Music was established in 1965.

Rolf Martin Zinkernagel AC is Professor of Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich. He received his MD degree from the University of... Basel in 1970 and his PhD degree from the Australian National University in 1975. In addition to the Nobel Prize, he also won The Albert Lasker Medical Research Award in 1995, and the Cancer Research Institute William B. Coley Award in 1987. He is a member of the Cancer Research Institute Scientific Advisory Council, The National Academy of Sciences, and The Academy of Cancer Immunology. Together with the Australian Peter C. Doherty he received the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. With this he became the 24th Swiss Nobel laureate. In 1999 he was awarded an honorary Companion of the Order of Australia , Australia's highest civilian honour, for his scientific work with Doherty. Viruses infect host cells and reproduce inside them. Killer T-cells destroy those infected cells so that the viruses can't reproduce.

Andrew "Tridge" Tridgell is an Australian computer programmer best known as the author of and contributor to the Samba file server, and co-inventor... of the rsync algorithm. He is known for his analysis of complex proprietary protocols and algorithms, to allow compatible free and open source software implementations. Tridgell was a major developer of the Samba software, analysing the Server Message Block protocol used for workgroup and network file sharing by Microsoft Windows products. He developed the talloc hierarchical memory allocator, originally as part of Samba. For his PhD thesis, he co-developed rsync, including the rsync algorithm, a highly efficient file transfer and synchronization tool. He also was the original author of rzip, which uses a similar algorithm to rsync. He is the author of KnightCap, a reinforcement-learning based chess engine. Tridgell was also a leader in hacking the TiVo to make it work in Australia, which uses the PAL video format. In April 2005, Tridgell tried to produce free software that interoperated with the BitKeeper source code repository.
