It is the county seat of Wharton County and is located on the Colorado River of Texas just south of U.S. Highway 59. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.2 square miles , of which, 7.2 square miles of it is land and 0.14% is water. There were 4,000 housing units at an average density of 553.6 per square mile . The racial makeup of the city was 56.33% White, 26.43% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 14.18% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races.
