The St. Jakob Stadium was a football stadium in Basel, Switzerland and the former home of Swiss club FC Basel. It was built in 1954, and as well as... serving as a club stadium, it hosted several important matches, including a 1954 FIFA World Cup semi-final and four Cup Winners' Cup finals. Tickets and posters for a planned Madonna concert on August 31, 1987, were printed, but the event never materialised, because of failed negotiations between Madonna's management and the Swiss concert promoter, Good News. A gig in Nice, France was instead organised for that date. The St. Jakob-Park has been built in its place. It was nicknamed "Joggeli" by Basel supporters. During the 1954 FIFA World Cup, St. Jakob Stadium hosted 4 group stage matches, one quarter-final match, and one semi-final match.

Stadion Schützenmatte is a sports stadium with track and field facilities in the Bachletten quartier in Basel, Switzerland. It is the home... ground of BSC Old Boys Basel and, together, the pitch and tennis courts make up the western part of the Schützenmatte sports complex. The stadium's capacity is approximately 8,000 , but it can now be increased up to 12,000 people. During the construction of the St. Jakob-Park, between 1998 and 2001, Stadion Schützenmatte was the temporary home ground of FC Basel.

Stadion Rankhof is a football stadium in Basel, Switzerland. It has a capacity of 7,600 with 1,000 seats and 6,600 standing places. The record... attendance of the original stadium was about 30'000 spectators. The Stadium was rebuilt between 1993 and 1995. The stands face south towards the grass pitch. The north side of the stadium is completely construed of glass to protect against the wind. The dimenstion of the pitch is 100 x 64 metres. It has a grass surface and flood-lighting. The second pitch, north of the stands, is the same size and also has flood-lighting. Rankhof has four training and one synthetic pitch, this also has flood-lights. Further there is a gymnasium and six tennis courts. Rankhof is the home ground for FC Nordstern Basel and FC Basel U-21. Otto Heinrich "Pim" Frank was a German-born businessman and the father of Anne Frank and Margot Frank. As the sole member of his family to survive... the Holocaust, he inherited Anne's manuscripts after her death, arranged for the publication of her diary in 1947, and oversaw its translation to the stage and screen. Frank was born in Frankfurt. He was the second son of Michael Frank and Alice Stern Frank. His siblings were Robert Frank, Helene Frank, and Herbert Frank. Otto was a cousin of the well known furniture designer Jean-Michel Frank, and a grandson of Zacharias Frank. Frank served in the German army as an officer during the First World War. He worked in the bank his family ran until it collapsed in the early 1930s. He married Edith Holländer—an heiress to a scrap-metal and industrial-supply business—on 12 May 1925 in Frankfurt, and their first daughter, Margot Betti, was born on 16 February 1926, followed by Anne on 12 June 1929. As the tide of Nazism rose in Germany and anti-Jewish decrees encouraged attacks on Jewish individuals and families, Frank decided to evacuate his family to the safer western nations of Europe.

Stephan Remmler is one of three members of the German band Trio. He performed most of the vocals for the band's songs. He was a member of the band... alongside Gert Krawinkel, who played the guitar, and Peter Behrens, who played the drums. After the split of Trio in 1986, Remmler continued his musical career as solo artist, releasing various singles and albums until 1996. His work contains Schlager and drinking songs as well. His biggest hits were Keine Sterne in Athen and Alles hat ein Ende in 1987. His 1990s releases did tend more to rock music. Remmler left the music business in 1996 and took a ten year break before his comeback in 2006. He currently lives with his family in Basel, Switzerland. He is married to an interior designer named Hilana Raitzik-Remmler and has three sons.

Tennis player Roger Federer is a Swiss tennis professional, currently ranked World No. 1. Many experts and many of his own tennis peers believe... that Federer may be the greatest men's singles player of all time. Federer has won eleven Grand Slam men's singles titles in 33 appearances , three Tennis Masters Cup titles, and 14 ATP Masters Series titles. In 2004, the Swiss became the first man since 1988 to win three of four Grand Slam singles tournaments in the same year: the Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open. In 2006, he became the first and only male player to repeat this feat in the Open Era and also the first man in the Open Era to win at least ten singles tournaments in three consecutive years . He is also the only player ever to have won both the Wimbledon and U.S. Open singles titles in three consecutive years.

Paul Sacher was a Swiss conductor, patron, and impresario. Sacher studied under Felix Weingartner, among others. In 1926 he founded the Basel... Chamber Orchestra to play both modern works and those written before the classical period. Immensely wealthy, Sacher commissioned works from many well-known composers, including Igor Stravinsky , Béla Bartók , Bohuslav Martinů , Arthur Honegger , Frank Martin , Paul Hindemith, Hans Werner Henze, Richard Strauss, Elliott Carter, Witold Lutosławski , Henri Dutilleux, and Harrison Birtwistle. Pierre Boulez wrote his Grawemeyer Award-winning work Sur Incises for Sacher's 90th birthday. Boulez bequeathed his entire catalogue to the Paul Sacher Foundation.

Dani Levy is a film maker, theatrical director and actor. Dani Levy's films include RobbyKallePaul, I Was on Mars, Meschugge, Du mich auch and... Väter. Väter starred Christiane Paul. His most recent film is Alles auf Zucker!, a comedy about a secularised Jew from the former GDR who has to reconcile himself with his Orthodox brother. A comedy about Adolf Hitler starring German comedian Helge Schneider titled Mein Führer – Die wirklich wahrste Wahrheit über Adolf Hitler was released in January 2007. Levy said he was influenced by the theory of Swiss-based psychologist Alice Miller, published in 1980, that something must have gone wrong with Hitler in his childhood. His 1995 film Stille Nacht won an Honourable Mention at the 46th Berlin International Film Festival. He is one of the founders of the German company X Filme Creative Pool. Levy is Jewish.

Marc Allégret was a French screenwriter and film director. Born in Basel, Basel-Stadt, Switzerland, he was the elder brother of Yves... Allégret. Marc was educated to be a lawyer. Allégret became André Gide's lover when he was fifteen and Gide was forty-seven. Later, Marc was to fall briefly under the spell of Cocteau, who Gide feared would "corrupt" him. Marc's father, Elie Allégret, had originally been hired by Gide's mother to tutor her son in light of his weak grades in school, after which he and his charge became fast friends. In 1895 Elie was best man at Gide's wedding. After filming a 1927 trip to the Congo with Gide, he chose to pursue a career in the motion picture industry. His relationship with Gide ended after that trip, as Allégret found out that he preferred women after having experiences with Congolese women. They nevertheless remained close friends until Gide's death in 1951. After working and training as an assistant director, in 1931 he directed his first feature Mam'zelle Nitouche and the following year received much acclaim for his film, Fanny.

George Gruntz is a Swiss jazz pianist, organist, harpsichordist, keyboardist and composer most noteworthy for his work with artists such as Phil... Woods, Roland Kirk, Don Cherry, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin and Mel Lewis. From 1972 to 1994 he served as artistic director for the JazzFest Berlin. Gruntz is also an accomplished arranger and composer, having been commissioned by many orchestras and symphonies.
