Battle of Methven

Methven is a large village in the Scottish region of Perth and Kinross, on the A85 road due west of the town of Perth. Methven is close to another... Perthshire village, Almondbank. The village has its own primary school, church, bowling club, 2 community halls, playing field with sports facilities and skate-park, and, a variety of businesses. The village has two restaurants, two public bars, accommodation, a Chinese takeaway/chippie, a garage, haulage firm, a general store, and a post office/general store. For many years there was a tearoom called 'The Pantry', but it is currently closed. In February 2008, a sports and remedial massage parlour opened, replacing a hairdressing salon, but was closed by October 2008 and the unit was vacant for just under a year and a half, with the current occupant, a DIY trader having opened shop by March 2010. This is the second time that the unit serves as a DIY Store. The village restaurant had a change of ownership in October 2009, becoming an Indian Restaurant. A second restaurant opened in early 2011 as part of a new business that was established with the take over, refurbishment and re-branding of the former 'Methven Arms Hotel'.

The First War of Scottish Independence lasted from the invasion by England in 1296 until the de jure restoration of Scottish independence with the... Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton in 1328. De facto independence had been established in 1314 at the Battle of Bannockburn. Throughout Scotland, there was widespread discontent and disorder after the supposed conquest, and acts of defiance were directed against local English officials. In 1297, the country erupted in open revolt, and Andrew de Moray and William Wallace emerged as the first significant Scottish patriots. Andrew de Moray was the son of a northern landowner, Sir Andrew de Moray of Petty. Andrew and his father were both captured in the rout after the Battle of Dunbar in April 1296. Andrew the younger was initially held captive in Chester Castle on the Anglo-Welsh border, from which he escaped during the winter of 1296-97. He returned to his father's castle at Avoch on the northern shore of the Moray Firth, where he raised his banner in the name of Scotland's king, John Balliol.
