University of Maryland, The Founding Campus, was founded in 1807. It comprises some of the oldest professional schools in the nation and world. It is the original campus of the University System of Maryland. Located on 60 acres in downtown Baltimore, Maryland, it is part of the University System... of Maryland. Effective July 1, 2010, Jay A Perman, M.D., was appointed president by Dr. William English Kirwan, chancellor of the University of Maryland System. UMB comprises seven professional schools: The University of Maryland Dental School was the first dental school in the world. Founded in 1840 as the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery , it was chartered by an act of the Maryland General Assembly. Its principal founders were Drs. Horace H. Hayden and Chapin A. Harris. It was the first school in the world to offer a science-based curriculum in dentistry. It currently ranks among top 10 in the nation to receive NIH research funding. The school moved to a new building in October 2006.

The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law is the second-oldest law school in the United States by date of establishment and third-oldest by date of first classes. The school is located on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore in Downtown Baltimore's West Side. The... school was founded in 1816 as the Maryland Law Institute and began regular instruction in 1824. Due to its location in downtown Baltimore, Maryland, Maryland Law is part of the District of Columbia–Baltimore legal and business communities. In 2003, the law school moved into a new, state-of-the-art facility at 500 West Baltimore Street on the west side of downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. In 2009, the School of Law appointed its ninth dean of the school, Phoebe A. Haddon, who previously was a faculty member at Temple University Beasley School of Law, and is a national leader in legal education and an expert on jury participation, the courts and diversity. In 2011, the law school received a $30 million donation from the W.P. Carey Foundation, which is the largest gift in the school's history.
