The United States presidential election of 1992 had three major candidates: Incumbent Republican President George H. W. Bush; Democrat Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, and independent Texas businessman Ross Perot. Bush had alienated much of his conservative base by breaking his 1988 campaign pledge... against raising taxes, the economy was in a recession, and Bush's perceived greatest strength, foreign policy, was regarded as much less important following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the relatively peaceful climate in the Middle East after the defeat of Iraq in the Gulf War. Clinton won a plurality in the popular vote, and a wide Electoral College margin. Conservative journalist Pat Buchanan was the primary opponent of President Bush. However, Buchanan's best showing was in the New Hampshire primary on 2/18/1992 - where Bush won by a 53-38% margin. President Bush won 73% of all primary votes, with 9,199,463 votes. Buchanan won 2,899,488 votes; unpledged delegates won 287,383 votes, and David Duke as founder of the Louisiana-based Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, a Ku Klux Klan group won 119,115 votes.

Georgetown University is a Jesuit private university located in Georgetown, Washington, DC. Father John Carroll founded the school in 1789, though its roots extend back to 1634. While the school struggled financially in its early years, Georgetown expanded into a branched university after the... Georgetown is the oldest Roman Catholic university in the United States, and its religious heritage is used to define the institution. The university's mixed endorsement of Roman Catholic and secular viewpoints has caused controversy at times. Georgetown's three urban campuses feature traditional collegiate architecture and layout, but prize their green spaces and environmental commitment. The main campus is known for Healy Hall, a designated National Historic Landmark. Academically, Georgetown is divided into four undergraduate schools and four graduate schools, with popular programs and notable faculty in international relations, government, law, medicine, and business. Yale Law School, or YLS, is the law school of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Established in 1843, it is one of the few schools belonging to the Ivy League that offers the J.D., LL.M. and J.S.D. degrees. In addition it also offers the M.S.L. degrees in law. It also hosts visiting... scholars and a number of legal research centers. The school's prestige and small size make its admissions process among the most selective of any United States law school. Yale has been ranked as the best law school in the country by U.S. News and World Report in every year in which the magazine has published law school rankings. Among other luminaries, former U.S. President William Howard Taft was a professor of constitutional law at the school from 1913 until he resigned to become Chief Justice of the United States in 1921. Presidents Gerald Ford and Bill Clinton received their law degrees at Yale Law School later in the century, and the law school's library has been memorialized as the meeting place of Bill and fellow student and current Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The University of Oxford , located in the English city of Oxford, is the oldest surviving university in the English-speaking world and is regarded as one of the world's leading academic institutions. Although the exact date of foundation remains unclear, there is evidence of teaching there as far... back as the 11th century. The University grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. In post-nominals the University of Oxford is typically abbreviated as Oxon. , although Oxf is sometimes used in official publications. After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge, where they established what became the University of Cambridge. The two "ancient universities" have many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge. In addition to cultural and practical associations as a historic part of British society, the two universities have a long history of rivalry with each other.

The 2000 City of Ottawa elections were held on November 13, 2000, in Ottawa, Canada. The elections were held for mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council... and a number of school trustees. These elections would mark the first for the newly amalgamated city, which now included 10 new municipalities in addition to Ottawa. At the time of the city, the amalgamation had not occurred yet, the official date of that happened on January 1, 2001. The race for mayor only had two major candidates, that of the Chair of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton, Bob Chiarelli and the mayor of the City of Gloucester, Claudette Cain. Cain did very well in her native Gloucester, as well as in the more francophone areas like Cumberland and Vanier. Bob Chiarelli won most of the other wards, including one that was partly in Gloucester. His strongest showing was in Kanata and Kitchissippi Ward. The city council elections were very fierce, because many wards faced incumbents against each other because of the amalgamation. In the rural areas, some mayors ran for city council.

STS-92 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station flown by Space Shuttle Discovery. STS-92 marked the 100th mission of the Space... Shuttle. It was launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, October 11, 2000. STS-92 was an ISS assembly flight that brought the Z1 truss, Control Moment Gyros, Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 and two DDCU to the space station. ITS Z1 is an early exterior framework to allow the first U.S. solar arrays on flight 4A to be temporarily installed on Unity for early power. The Ku-band communication system supports early science capability and U.S. television on 6A. The CMGs weigh about 600 lb and provide non-propulsive attitude control when activated on 5A, and PMA-3 provides shuttle docking port for solar array installation on 4A, Lab installation on 5A. The mission included seven days docked with the ISS, four EVAs and two ingress opportunities.

The Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games or the Millennium Games/Games of the New Millennium, officially known as the Games of the XXVII Olympiad, were... an international multi-sport event which was celebrated between 16 September and 1 October 2000 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was the second time that the Summer Olympics were held in the Southern Hemisphere, the first one being in Melbourne in 1956, and as a result of this location and the dates, took place in early spring. Sydney won the right to host the Games on 23 September 1993, after being selected over Beijing, Berlin, Istanbul and Manchester in four rounds of voting, at the 101st IOC Session in Monte Carlo, Monaco. In 2002, the Auditor-General of New South Wales reported that the Sydney Games cost $AUD 6.6 billion, with a net cost to the public between $AUD 1.7 and 2.4 billion. It has been estimated that the economic impact of the 2000 Olympics was that $AUD 2.1 billion has been shaved from public consumption. Economic growth was not stimulated to a net benefit and in the years since 2000, foreign tourism to NSW grew by less than tourism to Australia as a whole.

Operation Barras was the name given to a hostage rescue operation by the British Special Air Service, Special Boat Service, and Parachute Regiment in... Sierra Leone on 10 September 2000. The men on the ground nicknamed the dangerous mission 'Operation Certain Death'. Eleven members of the British Army's Royal Irish Regiment led by Major Alan Marshall and their Sierra Leone Army liaison officer, Lieutenant Musa Bangura were taken prisoner and held hostage by an armed rebel group known as the West Side Boys led by Foday Kallay on August 25, 2000. Some controversy exists regarding the mission of the British troops; British sources initially maintained that the soldiers were returning to Freetown from a meeting with Jordanian United Nations forces when they were captured. However, the Nigerian UN commander, General Garba, claims that the British soldiers never met with the Jordanian troops. British authorities later admitted that their soldiers may have been captured while deep in rebel territory. On 3 September, five of the eleven British soldiers were released in exchange for a satellite phone and medical supplies.
