Boshin War

The Battle of Awa occurred on 28 January 1868 during the Boshin War in Japan, in the area of Awa Bay near Osaka. Involving ships of the Tokugawa... Shogunate and Satsuma vessels loyal to the imperial court in Kyoto, the battle was the second naval battle in Japanese history between modern naval forces . Enomoto Takeaki led the Shogunal navy to victory at Awa, in one of the few Tokugawa successes of the Boshin War. The engagement, between warships of the domain of Satsuma and warships of the Tokugawa shogunate was Japan's first naval battle between elements of a modern navy. It happened one day after the land Battle of Toba-Fushimi, which the Shogunate lost to the Imperial forces. The naval battle of Awa, however, was a Tokugawa victory. The Satsuma domain was preparing to return its troops to Kasgoshima aboard two transports, the Hoho and the Heiun , protected by the Satsuma warship Kasuga stationed in Hyōgo harbour. The Shogunal navy under Enomoto Takeaki was nearby with the Kaiyō Maru as its main unit, and had been supporting the Battle of Toba-Fushimi from the sea.

The Battle of Miyako Bay was a naval action on 1869-05-06 . It was part of the overall Battle of Hakodate at the end of the Boshin War. After the... remnants of the Bakufu army loyal to the former Tokugawa shogunate refused to surrender to the new Meiji government in the Battle of Ueno and Battle of Aizu, they fled north to occupy the island of Hokkaidō and established the Republic of Ezo. The navy of the Imperial forces also moved north to support the eventual invasion of Hokkaidō. The Imperial navy departed Tokyo on 1869-03-09, and reached the harbor of Miyako, north of Sendai, on March 20. The government fleet had been rapidly constituted around the French-built ironclad warship Kōtetsu, which had been purchased from the United States. Other ships included Kasuga, Hiryū, Teibo, Yoshun, and Moshun, which had been supplied by the domains of Saga, Chōshū and Satsuma to the new central government in 1868. There were altogether 8 Imperial ships: Kōtetsu, Kasuga, 3 small corvettes and 3 transport ships.

The Battle of Toba-Fushimi occurred between pro-Imperial and Tokugawa shogunate forces during the Boshin War in Japan. The battle started on 27... January 1868 , when the forces of the Tokugawa shogunate and the allied forces of Chōshū, Satsuma and Tosa domains clashed near Fushimi. The battle lasted for four days, ending in a decisive defeat for the Tokugawa shogunate. On 4 January 1868, the restoration of Imperial rule was formally proclaimed. Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu had earlier resigned his authority to the emperor, agreeing to "be the instrument for carrying out" imperial orders. The Tokugawa Shogunate had ended. However, while Yoshinobu's resignation had created a nominal void at the highest level of government, his apparatus of state continued to exist. Moreover, the Tokugawa family remained a prominent force in the evolving political order, a prospect hard-liners from Satsuma and Chōshū found intolerable.
