Brunswick is the major urban and economic center in southeastern Georgia in the United States. The municipality is located on a harbor near the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 30 miles north of Florida and 70 miles south of South Carolina. Brunswick is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway which separates it from the Golden Isles. It is the second-largest city on Georgia's coast, after Savannah, and is the seat of government for Glynn County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 15,383 with a metropolitan population of 112,370. The city's metropolitan area... is the twelfth-largest in the state of Georgia and includes the counties of Glynn, Brantley, and McIntosh. The city traces its roots to its 1738 settlement as a tobacco plantation by British colonists and a southern buffer to Spanish Florida. It came under provincial control in 1771 and was founded as Brunswick after the duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg in Germany, the ancestral home of the Hanoverians. It was officially incorporated in 1856. Brunswick is near Jacksonville, Florida, and Savannah, Georgia.
