Encapsulated Postscript Format

An EPS file contains Postscript data which describes the actual image or graphics, it can also contain a preview of the image. This makes EPS files somewhat predictable and can run on both Windows and Mac.

Portable Network graphics

A PNG file is an improvement to the GIF and contains loss-less bit-mapped data. It supports a wide range of color palettes, but was intended for internet use, not professional printing. In addition the image-file format does not require a patent license.

Graphics Interchange Format

The GIF was created by CompuServe in 1987. The file contains bitmap data and is widely used on the internet due to its vast compatibility. The format supports 256 colors and can also be used for animations. Due to color limitations GIFs are not usable for photographs.

Adobe Illustrator

Developed by Adobe Systems an (AI) is a proprietary file format most commonly used for vector based artwork or text. AI artwork is primarily viewed in either PDF or EPS file formats. Adobe Illustrator uses the .ai filename extension.

Joint Photographic Experts Group

The Jpeg is the most widely used file format for photographs used to accurately represent fine color tones and shading variations. JPEG is not well adapted to line drawings, vector images etc., such artwork should be output in other more suitable formats.

Portable Document Format

Created by adobe in 1993, the PDF file format was designed to represent two dimensional documents independent of a users system, software or hardware. In addition, a PDF has security features unlike a physical paper document.
