If you take road trips frequently and have small children, stop torturing yourself. Don't make another trip without investing in a car video system. Whether you choose an in-dash system or a backseat system, JL Audio, Sony, Alpine, and many other manufacturers will make your road trips much more pleasant.
Which car video system is the better option? Usually, backseat car video systems are better for lengthy road trips. In-dash car video systems are designed for safety, and will not allow video play unless the car is parked and the emergency brake is activated. These, however, do act as a car audio source or feature navigational displays while the car is in motion.
Car Video Monitors
In-dash car video systems, however, usually offer excellent audio playback and are easily controlled by the driver. Car monitors used with these systems, however, are usually seven inches or less in size, and fold down for storage when not in use.
Many systems also offer video playback of rear-view cameras that help drivers to view blind spots. They also support navigation systems and offer superb audio quality for listening to cassette, DVD, or MP3 files.
Backseat car video systems offer excellent entertainment with the addition of a car DVD player or VCR. These systems feature two different types of video monitors. Overhead monitors are attached to the vehicle's ceiling, and flip down for viewing. Professional installation is more expensive, but handier; these often are more complicated to install, but offer better viewing quality overall.
In comparison, a headrest monitor can be attached to the rear of the vehicle's front headrest. These are relatively simple to attach with mounting kits or brackets. The DVD or VHS player can be installed beneath the front seat or in the center console, but will have to be connected to the monitors. Consider convenience when installing the DVD player; choose a location where discs can easily be inserted.
For the ultimate in portability and short-term use, buy an all-in-one car video system. These systems are composed of a monitor and media player that can be strapped on the rear of a car seat and powered by the car's cigarette lighter. They can be easily removed and moved from vehicle to vehicle as well.
Car DVD Systems, TV Tuners, and Other Extras
Buy a basic system, or choose car video systems fully loaded with the latest options for safety and convenience. Some systems are compatible with iPods, allowing the entire song library to appear on a touch screen, so drivers can play their favorite music safely. Touch screen controls are also perfect for using with navigation systems on an in-dash car receiver.
Some models also offer remote controls for use by backseat passengers. These are helpful in changing DVDs or CDs while the car is in operation. Most even allow rear seat passengers to tune a satellite TV if your car has a tv tuner or change MP3 files. Most DVD players support these files as well as WMA, CD-R, and VCD formats.
Some drivers also enjoy the convenience of rear-view cameras that make changing lanes safer. Navigation systems are also a good option for frequent travelers. Multi-zone audio, however, is probably one of the ultimate options in luxury and convenience. These allow passengers to experience different audio, game consoles, or video feeds as they prefer.
Car Audio Electronics
Three different types of sound installation are available for car audio systems. Some drivers may want to focus on safety and quiet. Most car video monitors support this, offering headphone jacks that allow passengers to listen quietly with normal headphones. Alternatively, users can purchase receivers that support the use of wireless headphones by means of wireless transmitters.
Another option is a completely integrated system that allows the monitor and DVD player to use the vehicle's installed audio system to transmit audio via infrared technology to a wireless headphone set. These offer high quality sound for playing audio files.
Some audiophiles prefer to go "all out" and choose car video systems that also incorporate Dolby Digital. They then add center-channel speakers as well as a subwoofer to create 5.1 surround sound throughout the entire vehicle. These offer incredible sound quality, but are more expensive than other options.
Next time you drive off to see Grandma or hit the road for a long family vacation, don't sweat the travel time. Put in the latest SpongeBob or Veggie Tales release, and relax, or let your teens attack each other virtually with the latest video game, and enjoy the peace and quiet.
