The La Costa Resort and Spa is a luxury destination hotel located in Carlsbad, California, and is known for its golf courses and its location in the... San Diego area hills. Every year in late July or early August, the resort hosts a woman's professional tennis tournament, now known as the Southern California Open. La Costa served as a home to two notable PGA Tour events. For thirty years, the resort hosted the Mercedes Championships , from 1969 to 1998. That event left for Maui, Hawaii, when La Costa was selected to host the inaugural WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in 1999. It hosted that event for seven of eight years , until it moved to Arizona in 2007. In March 2010, the resort hosted the Kia Classic, an LPGA tour event with an estimated attendance of 43,000. The Kia Classic is scheduled to return to La Costa in 2012. In March 1975, Penthouse published an article headlined "La Costa: The Hundred-Million-Dollar Resort with Criminal Clientele," written by Jeff Gerth and Lowell Bergman.

The Museum of Making Music — a division of the NAMM Foundation — is a 501 non-profit organization located in Carlsbad, California. The... museum opened to the public on March 5, 2000. Its mission is to "celebrate the rich history and encourage the future of music making." The museum curates public exhibits that relate to the history of American popular music, the manufacture and retail of musical instruments and the history of the music products industry from the 1890s to the present day. The museum's galleries consist of more than 450 vintage instruments and artifacts on display, hundreds of audio samples of popular music and an area for visitors to interact with a variety of live, hands-on instruments. The museum also organizes public events, performances and lectures whose purpose is to entertain, educate and inform audiences of the benefits and heritage of making music.

Anthony Frank "Tony" Hawk , nicknamed "The Birdman" is an American professional skateboarder and actor. Hawk gained significant fame for completing... the first 900 as well as his licensed video game titles distributed by Activision. He is widely considered one of the most successful and influential pioneers of modern vertical skateboarding. Raised in San Diego, California, Hawk was described as being "hyperactive" as a child. His parents supported his skateboarding because it served as an outlet for his excessive energy, and as Hawk's skills developed, he became a professional skateboarder at age fourteen. In 1999, he became the first skater to land a 900. In 2002, he created the Boom Boom HuckJam, an extreme sports exhibition and tour which launched in Las Vegas. Throughout his career, Hawk has made numerous appearances in films and other media, as well as his own series of video games. He has also been involved in various philanthropic activities including his own Tony Hawk Foundation which helps build skateparks in underprivileged areas, and also including collaborations with other athletes in the charity Athletes for Hope.
