Game Overview

Intruders have broken into the professor's home and threaten to steal ChibiRobo for their own. It's now up to ChibiRobo, the human robot, to protect the Professor and himself. Lead him to power sources to recharge his battery and help him gain experience as he works to save the day.

The Bottom Line

Gamers take control of the Chibi Robo, a pint-sized machine designed specifically to take care of a family's house. The robot needs to keep the house "happy." To do that, Chibi must walk around the home and clean it up, interact with other machines and people, and even -- according to the storyline - stop a group of bumbling thieves from making off with precious valuables. An electricity counter located in the bottom-right corner of the screen constantly counts down. When Chibi is getting low, players will want to recharge. The game features a day and night system, where days last about 10 minutes and nights the same. The environments slightly change depending on the time of day. For instance, a character not available in the day might be sleeping on the couch at night, and robots normally roaming the level in the afternoon might be gone in the evening.

Playing Chibi-Robo can sometimes feel like a chore, but the game is redeemed by a great sense of humor and colorful cast of characters.

I expect that too many people will glance at this game and conclude that it's not for them, simply because it's either too weird or too cute. Truthfully, it's both, but it's also a very enjoyable, fun, and rewarding puzzle-platformer.

Game Features

Special powers/weapons/moves/features: Chibi has a host of tools at his disposal, from the Chibi-Copter helicopter attachment to the Chibi-Blaster sonic cannon. He also can use many of the household objects he finds, from toothbrushes for scrubbing to mugs for protecting himself from attackers. He discovers a variety of different costumes throughout the game too. By striking a pose in his costume, he can perform different actions: Dressing as a dog allows him to speak with the family canine, while wearing his pajamas allows him to jump from day to night.
