The South Carolina Governor's Mansion is a historic U.S. governor's mansion in the Arsenal Hill neighborhood of Columbia, South Carolina and the... official residence of the Governor of South Carolina. It is a Federal style home influenced by British Colonial plantations. The building has a white stucco exterior and was originally part of Arsenal Academy, a state military school. The academy closed because of the American Civil War, the city of Columbia burned in 1865 and the mansion was the only surviving building of the school. The house became South Carolina's executive mansion in 1868. On June 5, 1970, the building was registered with the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The mansion is located on a single city block, and is surrounded by magnolia plants, elm and oak trees, and various other plants. It is accessed by a circular driveway around a fountain in front on the residence's main entrance. The building has a flat roof and a large central pavilion around the main entrance. The mansion has 15 rooms .

Currell College, completed in 1919, is an historic two-story redbrick university building on the campus of the University of South Carolina in... Columbia, South Carolina in the United States. It was designed by Darlington native William Augustus Edwards who designed academic buildings at 12 institutions of higher learning as well as 13 courthouses and numerous other buildings in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Currell, which is pronounced as if it were spelled Curl, is the only building that Edwards built for USC. The Cain House at 1619 Pendleton Street which he designed in 1912 for a private owner, though, is now part of the expanded USC campus and is used as The Inn at USC. It was originally named Petigru College and was built to serve as the USC law school, which had outgrown its quarters in Legare College. When a new law school building was built in 1952, the name Petigru College was given to it and the 1919 building was renamed Currell College to honor William S. Currell, USC's president when it was built, and it was then used by the history department.

The Columbia Canal is the surviving canal of a series of canals built by the State of South Carolina in 1824 using the labor of Irish immigrants to... provide a direct water routes between the upstate settlements and the towns on the fall line. It is on the Congaree and Broad Rivers in Columbia, South Carolina. It is the focal point of the Riverfront Park in Columbia. The canal is now used to generate hydroelectric power by the South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. The Columbia Canal is on the National Register of Historic Places, No. 79002392. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History has additional pictures and information, and copies of the nomination forms. There are additional pictures, and information available from the Historic American Engineering Record at the Library of Congress. In 1820, construction started on a canal to navigate the rapids where the Broad River and the Saluda River form the Congaree River. It used a natural ravine that was between the City of Columbia and the Congaree and Broad Rivers. The canal started between Lumber and Richland Streets. It ran along the Congaree for about 3.1 mi .

She has achieved success appearing in roles in film and television. Davis was born in Boulder, Colorado. An only child, her parents divorced when she was a baby. She was adopted by her stepfather, professor Keith Davis, after he married her mother, Dorothy, a university data analyst, in 1968. She has three sisters from her adoptive father's first marriage. Early in her childhood, she and her parents moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where her father served as provost and teaches psychology at the University of South Carolina. Davis wanted to be an actress from the age of 9, when she was cast in the Workshop Theatre production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Davis lived in South Carolina until she graduated from A.C. Flora High School in 1983. She then moved to New Jersey, where she attended Rutgers University. Davis graduated with a BFA degree in Acting from Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts in 1987.

Eli "Lucky" Thompson was a United States jazz tenor and soprano saxophonist. While John Coltrane usually receives the most credit for bringing the... soprano saxophone out of obsolescence in the early 1960s, Lucky Thompson, along with Steve Lacy, played it in a more advanced bebop format. Thompson was born in Columbia, South Carolina and moved to Detroit, Michigan during his childhood. Thompson had to raise his siblings after his mother died, and he practiced saxophone fingerings on a broom handle before acquiring his first instrument. He joined Erskine Hawkins' band in 1942 upon graduating from high school. After playing with the swing orchestras of Lionel Hampton, Don Redman, Billy Eckstine , Lucky Millinder, and Count Basie, he worked in rhythm and blues and then established a career in bebop and hard bop, working with Kenny Clarke, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Milt Jackson. Ben Ratliff notes that Thompson "connected the swing era to the more cerebral and complex bebop style.

He received an Honorary Academy Award in 1998 for his body of work and a Career Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival in 2004. Donen has been hailed by film critic David Quinlan as "the King of the Hollywood musicals". He began his career in the chorus line on Broadway for director George Abbott, where he befriended Gene Kelly. In 1943 he went to Hollywood and worked as a choreographer for several years before he and Kelly made On the Town in 1949. He then worked as a contract director for MGM under producer Arthur Freed and continued to make hit films and gain critical acclaim, both as a solo director and for his work with Kelly. In 1952 Donen and Kelly co-directed the musical Singin' in the Rain, which went on to become regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.

Ocean worked hard to support her sons, and left her children largely to their own devices.

Munn was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, the daughter of Russell and Nadine Munn. Her mother, an elementary school teacher, encouraged her daughter in the arts by letting her take dance and singing lessons at an early age. Munn graduated from AC Flora High School and The College of Charleston. From there, she moved to New York, where she won a role in the Off-Broadway classic, The Fantasticks. Munn's further auditions led to small roles in Hollywood productions; most notably in White Oleander alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and in Elizabethtown, directed by Cameron Crowe. Munn's biggest break came in September 2003 when she got a co-starring role, opposite Amanda Bynes and Jennie Garth, on the sitcom What I Like About You, as one of Holly's best friends, Tina Haven. Although their characters are the same age, Munn is twelve years older than her co-star Bynes. Munn remained on the show for three seasons until the show ended on April 24, 2006.

Ann Savage was an American film and television actress. She is best-remembered as the cigarette-puffing femme fatale in the critically acclaimed... film noir Detour , and starred in more than twenty B movies between 1943 and 1946. Effectively leaving the film business in the mid-1950s, Savage made occasional appearances on television and worked for industrial and inspirational film producers during the 1950s–1970s. She made a number of live appearances at film festivals, especially for screenings of Detour, and in 1986, she returned to film with an appearance in Fire with Fire and as a guest on the television series Saved by the Bell. In 2007, she was cast by director Guy Maddin as his mother in My Winnipeg, "a part that had been tipped to bring her an Academy Award and which introduced her to a legion of new fans". Ann Savage was born Bernice Maxine Lyon in Columbia, South Carolina. During her early years, her family was "on the move constantly" as her United States Army officer father "moved from base to base". After he died when Bernice was four years old, her mother moved the two of them to Los Angeles.
