The University of Alabama is a public coeducational university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States. Founded in 1831, it is the flagship university of the University of Alabama System, as well the senior and the largest in terms of enrollment among all of the state's universities. It is... known as The Capstone, a nickname that stems from a 1913 speech by then-president George H. Denny, who extolled the university as the "capstone of the public school system in the state." UA offers programs of study in 13 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's, Education Specialist, and doctoral degrees. The only publicly-supported law school in Alabama is at UA. Other academic programs unavailable elsewhere in Alabama include doctoral programs in anthropology, library and information studies, metallurgical engineering, music, Romance languages, and social work. As one of the first public universities established in early 19th century southwestern frontier of the US, UA left a vast cultural imprint on the state, region and nation as a whole for the past two centuries. The school was a center of activity during the American Civil War and the Civil Rights movement.

Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.7 square miles , of which 9.7 square miles is land and 0.04 square miles is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,341 people, 1,014 households, and 652 families residing in the city. The population density was 241.2 people per square mile . There were 1,192 housing units at an average density of 122.8 per square mile . The racial makeup of the city was 63.52% Black or African American, 33.40% White, 0.51% Native American, 0.26% Asian, and 2.31% from two or more races. 0.81% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,014 households out of which 23.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% were married couples living together, 24.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.
