Yale University is an American private Ivy League research university located in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Founded in 1701 in the Colony of Connecticut, the university is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Incorporated as the Collegiate School, the institution traces its roots to 17th-century clergymen who sought to establish a college to train clergy and political leaders for the colony. In 1861, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences became the first U.S. school to award the Ph.D. Yale became a founding member of the Association of American Universities in 1900. Yale College was transformed, beginning in the 1930s, through the establishment of residential colleges: 12 now exist and two more are planned. Yale employs over 1,100 faculty to teach and advise about 5,300 undergraduate and 6,100 graduate and professional students.

A general strike was called by the Union of Guadeloupe Workers headed by Elie Domota on January 20th, 2009. Nearly 25,000 workers took to the... streets resulting in petrol stations shuting down along with most shops and most tourists fleeing Guadeloupe proper. The demands of the workers included a $200 euro raise for the lowest workers in Guadeloupe. Nearly 22% of people are currently unemployed and there has been a 20% decrease in market value for all food and general merchandise. . In the early morning of February 18th, 2009 Jacques Bino, aged 50 was shot and killed by maurading youths in the capital of Guadeloupe in Pointe-a-Pitre. Three police officers were wounded in an exchange of gunfire as they came to the assistance of Mr. Bino but he expired before care could be provided. Elsewhere in Baie-Mahult three more police oficers were shot and wounded by rioters. Five shots were fired at security forces in Saint-Rose and several buildings were burnt down. Twenty rioters were arrested because of the incident. The conflict has exposed race and class divisions on the island, where the local white elite wields power over the black majority.

The Partit Laburista garnered 54.77% of first-count votes and the Partit Nazzjonalista garnered 40.49%; 2.31% of votes cast were invalid. Dr Simon Busuttil MEP was the only candidate to be elected on the first count with 68,782 single votes.

The Gaza War, known as Operation Cast Lead in Israel and as the Gaza Massacre or the Battle of al-Furqan [the criterion] in Gaza and by Hamas was... a three-week bombing and invasion of the Gaza Strip by Israel, and hundreds of rocket attacks on south of Israel which started on December 27, 2008 with a surprise air strike from Israel. Israel's stated aim was to stop rocket fire into Israel and arms import into the Gaza strip. Palestinian groups had been firing rockets "in response to Israeli massacres". Israeli forces attacked police stations, military targets including weapons caches and suspected rocket firing teams and other Hamas government buildings in the opening assault, striking in the densely populated cities of Gaza, Khan Younis and Rafah. An Israeli ground invasion began on January 3. Infantry commanders were given an unprecedented level of access to coordinate with air, naval, artillery, intelligence, and combat engineering units during this second phase. Various new technologies and hardware were also introduced. On January 5, IDF forces began operating in the densely populated urban centers of Gaza.

On November 16, 2008 a special group of the Azerbaijan army crossed the border between forces of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Azerbaijan near the... Ashagi Seyidakhmedli settlement. They tried to gain the rear of the NKR Defense Army units that were on duty. Defense Ministry of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic said that "servicemen of NKR Defense Army, while acting resolutely and in full coordination, during a battle of about half-hour long, threw the enemy back to its initial positions". The Azerbaijani side had left one soldier killed on the battlefield, while Karabakh troops suffered no losses. Armenian soldiers who reputed Azerbaijan's attack were awarded medals by the President of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Bako Sahakyan. Orkhan Shamilov's body was left behind by Azeri soldiers and was returned to Azerbaijani side on November 19.
