The University of Washington is a public research university in Seattle, Washington, United States. Founded in 1861, UW is the largest university in the Northwest and one of the oldest universities on the West Coast. The university has three campuses: the largest in the University District,... Seattle and two others in Tacoma and Bothell. Its operating expenses for fiscal year 2010 was more than US$ 5.0 billion. The UW occupies over 500 buildings, with over 20 million gross square footage of space, including the latest University of Washington Plaza consisting of the 325 ft UW Tower and conference center. The University of Washington is considered a Public Ivy institution and has been a member of the American Association of Universities. The university's research budget is among one of the highest in the United States and the university consistently ranks among the top 20 universities in the world. In athletics, the university competes in the NCAA Division I Pacific-12 Conference . The city of Seattle was one of several settlements in the mid to late 19th century vying for primacy in the newly formed Washington Territory.

San Pablo is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The city of Richmond surrounds nearly the whole city. The population was 29,139 at the 2010 census. The current Mayor is Paul V. Morris, and the current Vice Mayor is Cecilia Valdez. Current Councilmembers include Arturo M.... Cruz, Leonard R. McNeil, and Genoveva Garcia Calloway. The area in which today's San Pablo is situated was originally occupied by the Cuchiyun band of the Ohlone indigenous people. The area was claimed for the king of Spain in the late 18th century and was granted for grazing purposes to the Mission Dolores located in today's San Francisco. Upon Mexico's independence from Spain, church properties were secularized and in 1823, the area became part of a large grant to an ex-soldier stationed at the San Francisco Presidio, Francisco María Castro. The grant was given the name Rancho San Pablo, thus originating the name for today's city as well as for one of the East Bay's oldest principal roads, today's San Pablo Avenue .
