The Rheinstadion was a multi-purpose stadium, in Düsseldorf, Germany. The stadium was built, near the Rhine, in 1926 and held 55,900 people, at... the end of its life. It was the home ground for Fortuna Düsseldorf from 1953–1970 and 1972–2002. It was used during the 1988 European Championships. In 1995, the Rhein Fire, of the World League of American Football became tenants in their inaugural season. Metallica performed at the stadium during their Nowhere Else to Roam Tour on May 20, 1993, with The Cult & Suicidal Tendencies as their opening act. It was demolished in the summer of 2002, after the World Bowl championship game, to be replaced by the Esprit Arena in 2005.

Esprit Arena is a multi-functional football stadium in Düsseldorf, Germany. The stadium holds 54,600 and has a closable roof. The special... heating system allows comfortable events at the height of winter. It was built from 2002 to 2004 to replace the former Rheinstadion at the same site near the river Rhine. The structure's initial capacity of 51,500 was expanded in summer 2010 when seating areas were converted into standing terraces. It hosts association football team Fortuna Düsseldorf . The Arena was not one of the venues for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, but it hosted several international matches since it opened. The first international match in the Arena was an international friendly between Germany and Argentina on 9 February 2005, ending in a 2-2 draw. On 7 February 2007, Germany played their second international friendly in the Arena, beating Switzerland 3-1. In their third international friendly in the Arena, on 11 February 2009, Germany suffered a 1-0 defeat to Norway. The Arena also hosted two international friendlies of the Portuguese national football team.

The Paul-Janes-Stadion in Düsseldorf-Flingern is one of the home grounds of Fortuna Düsseldorf . It was built in 1930 by the team; now... city-owned, it has been named since 1990 after the long-standing Düsseldorf and national football player Paul Janes. Before 1990 was it called "Flinger Broich" or "Fortunaplatz". After World War II, the British army took over the stadium. A storm in 1958 destroyed the corrugated iron roof. In 1967 Fortuna Düsseldorf's clubhouse was built on the grounds. While the Rheinstadion was under renovation in the 1970s, the Paul-Janes-Stadion was a Bundesliga ground, and appropriate floodlighting was therefore installed. In 2001/2002 the stadium was further renovated, to provide Fortuna with a satisfactory ground after the demolition of the Rheinstadion. New terraces and a new grandstand were built. The renovations, financed by the City of Düsseldorf, cost €5 million.

Christian Johann Heinrich Heine was one of the most significant German poets of the 19th century. He was also a journalist, essayist, and literary... critic. He is best known outside Germany for his early lyric poetry, which was set to music in the form of Lieder by composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. Heine's later verse and prose is distinguished by its satirical wit and irony. His radical political views led to many of his works being banned by German authorities. Heine spent the last 25 years of his life as an expatriate in Paris. Heine was born in Düsseldorf, Rhineland, into a Jewish family. He was called "Harry" as a child, but became "Heinrich" after his conversion to Christianity in 1825. Heine's father, Samson Heine , was a textile merchant. His mother Peira , née van Geldern , was the daughter of a physician. Heinrich was the eldest of the four children; his siblings were Charlotte, Gustav - who later became Baron Heine-Geldern and publisher of the Viennese newspaper Das Fremdenblatt - and Maximilian, later a physician in Saint Petersburg.

Luise Rainer is a former German film actress. Known as The "Viennese Teardrop", she was the first woman to win two Academy Awards, and the first... person to win them consecutively. She was discovered by MGM talent scouts while acting on stage in Austria and Germany and after appearing in Austrian films. Aged 102, she is currently the oldest living Academy Award winner. Her training began in Germany from the age of 16 by leading Austrian stage director Max Reinhardt. After a few years, she became recognized as a "distinguished Berlin stage actress", acting with Reinhardt's Vienna theater ensemble. Critics "raved" about her stage and film acting quality, leading MGM to sign her to a three-year contract and bring her to Hollywood in 1935. A number of filmmakers anticipated she might become another Greta Garbo, MGM's leading female star. Her first American role was in the film Escapade , which was soon followed with a relatively small part in the musical biopic The Great Ziegfeld . Despite her limited appearances in the film, she "so impressed audiences" that she won the Oscar for Best Actress.

Heike Makatsch is a German actress and singer. Makatsch was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, the daughter of former German national ice hockey team... goaltender Rainer Makatsch. She spent several months in New Mexico in 1988 in an effort to improve her English, and later studied politics and sociology at the University of Düsseldorf for four semesters, which was followed by an apprenticeship as a dressmaker until 1994. Her television career started in 1993, when she was hired by music channel VIVA, hosting shows such as Interaktiv and Heikes Hausbesuche; two years later, on August 13, 1995, she became the host of the German chart show Bravo TV, aired by RTL II, a position she kept until summer 1996. In 1997 she started hosting her own weekly, late night show titled Heike Makatsch Show. However, due to bad ratings, it was cancelled after only eight episodes. Makatsch first appeared in a movie in 1996, when she starred in Detlev Buck's Männerpension ; she received the Bavarian Film Award as most talented young actor for her performance.

Otto Joachim, CQ was a German-born Canadian violist and composer of electronic music. Born in Düsseldorf, he trained as a violinist at... Düsseldorf and Cologne. In 1934 he left Nazi Germany and played in Singapore and Shanghai during the war years. He settled permanently in Montreal in 1949. For the next 15 years Joachim worked as a player, teacher, instrument builder and composer. Since the 1960s he has concentrated on his compositions which are a mix of aleatoric and electroacoustic works. In 1994, he received and honorary doctorate from Concordia University, Montreal. The multi-channel electroacoustic studio in the Department of Music at Concordia University is named "The Otto Joachim Project Studio". In 1993, he was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec. He died on July 30, 2010 in Montreal.

Gustaf Gründgens , born Gustav Heinrich Arnold Gründgens, was one of Germany's most famous and influential actors of the 20th century,... intendant and artistic director of theatres in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg. His career continued undisturbed through the years of the Nazi regime; the extent to which this can be considered as deliberate collaboration with the Nazis was hotly disputed . His single most famous role was that of Mephistopheles in Goethe's Faust in 1956/57, which is still considered by many to have been the best interpretation of the role ever given. Born in Düsseldorf, Gründgens after World War I attended the drama school of the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and started his career at smaller theaters in Halberstadt, Kiel, Berlin. In 1923 he went to the Kammerspiele in Hamburg, where he also appeared as a director for the first time, co-working with the author Klaus Mann, son of Thomas Mann, and his sister Erika. Gründgens, who meanwhile had changed his first name to "Gustaf", married Erika in 1926. However, they divorced three years later.

Elisabeth Röhm is a German-born American television actress. She is known for playing Assistant District Attorney Serena Southerlyn in the... American TV series Law & Order, and as Detective Kate Lockley in the TV series Angel. Röhm was born in Düsseldorf, West Germany, moving with her family to New York City before her first birthday. Her father, Eberhard Röhm, is a corporate lawyer and partner at Duane Morris. Her mother, Lisa Loverde, was an American scriptwriter who once wrote for the TV soap opera, Guiding Light. Röhm attended St. Andrew's-Sewanee School, a small private boarding school in Tennessee, then graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied writing and European History. Röhm received her first TV acting role in 1997, as Dorothy 'Dorf' Hayes in the American soap opera One Life to Live. She had a starring role in the 1999 BBC Northern Ireland mini-series Eureka Street, then portrayed recurring character Detective Kate Lockley in the first two seasons of the TV series Angel. While appearing in Angel, Röhm also had a regular role in the only season of the Turner Network Television drama series Bull.
