Ely

The White Pine County Courthouse was built in 1908 in Ely, Nevada. The Italianate building is sited on a hilltop near the commercial section of Ely.... It replaced a temporary wood frame courthouse that itself replaced a structure that burned in 1885 in the former county seat of Hamilton. A copper boom allowed the county to invest in the present substantial two story stone structure, designed by George T. Beardslee and built by R.E. Dodson and G.W. Weller for $49,688. The building is crowned by a small copper-domed cupola. A two story jail was added to the rear in 1925. The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is a railroad museum located in Ely, Nevada and operated by a historic foundation dedicate to the preservation of... the railroad. Museum activities include restoration and operation of historic railroad equipment, steam-powered excursions throughout the year, winter photo shoots, locomotive rentals, hand car races, lectures, an annual railroad history symposium, changing exhibits, and a variety of special events. The museum is situated at the East Ely Yards, which are part of the Nevada Northern Railway. The site is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places as the Nevada Northern Railway East Ely Yards and Shops and is also known as the "Nevada Northern Railway Complex". The rail yards were listed as a National Historic Landmark of the United States on September 27, 2006. "The Nevada Northern Railway Complex is the best-preserved, least altered, and most complete main yard complex remaining from the steam railroad era. It was established in 1905 to support the area's booming copper mining industry.

It was subsequently claimed by Spain as a part of Alta California until the Mexican War of Independence brought it under Mexican control.
