The burgeoning port and railroad industry, combined with oil discovery in 1901, has induced continual surges in the city's population. In the mid-twentieth century, Houston became the home of the Texas Medical Center—the world's largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions—and NASA's Johnson Space Center, where the Mission Control Center is located.

On Monday, August 15, 2005, Delta announced that it was selling Atlantic Southeast Airlines to the newly incorporated... SkyWest, Inc. for $425 million in cash, and on Thursday, September 8, 2005, SkyWest, Inc. announced that the acquisition had been completed. SkyWest Airlines and Atlantic Southeast Airlines, even though merged into one holding company maintain separate operations. SkyWest, Inc. in terms of revenue would be considered a major airline carrier as it has over $1 Billion annual revenue earnings. On August 4, 2010 the parent company, SkyWest Inc., announced that Atlantic Southeast Airlines would be attaining ExpressJet Airlines, and the two companies would be merged. The merger was completed on November 12, 2010. Between SkyWest and ASA, the airline operates the sixth-to-largest fleet in the world, consisting of 436 planes.
