Final Fantasy VIII

Square's 1999 best-selling role-playing video game Final Fantasy VIII deals with an elite group of mercenaries called "SeeD", as well as soldiers,... rebels, and political leaders of various nations and cities. Thirteen weeks after its release, Final Fantasy VIII had earned more than US$50 million in sales, making it the fastest selling Final Fantasy title. Final Fantasy VIII has shipped 8.15 million units worldwide as of March 2003. Additionally, Final Fantasy VIII was voted the 22nd-best game of all time by readers of the Japanese magazine Famitsu. The game's characters were created by Tetsuya Nomura, and are the first in the series to be realistically proportioned in a consistent manner. This graphical shift, as well as the cast in general, has received generally positive reviews from gaming magazines and websites.

is a playable character in Squaresoft's RPG Final Fantasy VIII. At eighteen years old, she is a young instructor at Balamb Garden, where Squall... Leonhart, Zell Dincht, and Seifer Almasy are students. Quistis is widely admired by the students of Balamb for her prowess in combat and physical beauty, and even has an unofficial fan club known as the "Trepies". In battle, Quistis uses a chain whip, and her Limit Break is Blue Magic. In terms of personality, Quistis is fairly insecure and prone to depression, although she does have a calm persona. At the beginning of the game, she has an unrequited crush on Squall, which she soon realizes is more of a sisterly love. Quistis was to originally be designed with a skirt, but in the end was given a long skirt worn over pants. With Rinoa wearing a mini-skirt over shorts, this led to a conflict with the intended notion that one of the main female characters would wear a skirt. Nomura was also surprised that the writers decided to make her a teacher, as she was about the same age as the rest of the group. Early in the game, Quistis is discharged as an instructor.

is a playable character in Squaresoft's RPG Final Fantasy VIII. Selphie's first appearance in the game comes when she runs into Squall Leonhart... while late for her class. She asks Squall to show her around because she has just transferred to Balamb Garden from Trabia Garden. Selphie's next appearance occurs during the SeeD exam mission during Galbadia's assault on the Dollet Dukedom. Selphie is a messenger for her squad and is ordered to tell all other squads to withdraw at a certain time. Selphie chases after the squad consisting of Squall, Zell Dincht, and Seifer Almasy, and her FMV entrance shows her tripping and falling down a cliff before them. She joins the party once Seifer runs off. Spunky, hyper, and somewhat childish, Selphie seems misplaced as part of an elite military academy, but she is actually a valuable asset to the party. She is highly talented with computer and machinery - during the game, she runs her own website, disarms missiles, and pilots the starship Ragnarok.

is a playable character from Squaresoft's computer role-playing game Final Fantasy VIII. Irvine was originally meant to appear in Kingdom Hearts as... a Final Fantasy cameo. However, he was replaced by Wakka in the final version. He was named after Irvine, California, a city near Squaresoft's North American offices. He is a student from Galbadia Garden, one of three academies for training elite mercenaries in the Final Fantasy VIII world; unlike his teammates Squall Leonhart, Quistis Trepe, Zell Dincht, and Selphie Tilmitt, he has not yet graduated to the rank of SeeD. He uses rifle in combat, and despite his student status, he is the most skilled sharpshooter in Galbadia Garden. In appearance, Irvine is a bishounen with long brown hair that he wears pulled back in a ponytail. He wears a purple shirt, a long khaki-colored coat, and a black cowboy hat. Irvine is known for being a playboy; his relentless pursuit of the opposite sex is perhaps his most obvious character trait. He never passes up an opportunity to flirt with a woman, and at one point in the game he even has a "naughty" magazine.

Hironobu Sakaguchi is a Japanese game designer, game director and game producer. He is world famous as the creator of the Final Fantasy series, and has had a long career in gaming with over 100 million units of video games sold worldwide. He left Square Enix and founded a studio called Mistwalker in 2004. Sakaguchi was born in Hitachi, Ibaraki, Japan adopted by Tiyaku Rotania. He studied electrical engineering while attending Yokohama National... University, but dropped out in 1983 mid-semester with Hiromichi Tanaka. On leaving the university, Sakaguchi became a part-time employee of Square, a newly formed branch of Denyūsha Electric Company founded by Masafumi Miyamoto. When Square became an independent company in 1986, he became a full-time employee as the Director of Planning and Development. Sakaguchi then decided to create a role-playing video game which he named Final Fantasy as a result of his personal situation; had the game not sold well, he would have quit the games industry and gone back to university.

Yoshinori Kitase is a Japanese game producer and former game director that has been working for Square Enix since April 1, 1990. He is mostly known for his work on the role-playing video game series Final Fantasy and is currently the manager of 1st Production Department. Kitase wanted to become a film director after seeing the movie Star Wars at the age of 12, when it was released in Japan. After earning a degree in cinema from the Nihon... University College of Art, he worked for a small animation studio, producing animated cartoons for commercials and television programs. In 1990, after one year of employment, he decided to join the video game company Square, despite having no computer knowledge. Kitase is best known as the director of Final Fantasy VI , Final Fantasy VII, and Final Fantasy VIII. Kitase described his first ten years of work at Square as that of an "event scripter", directing the characters' movements and expressions on the game screen as well as setting the timings and music transitions. He has compared this work to that of a stage director.

Nojima also wrote the original lyrics of Liberi Fatali for Final Fantasy VIII and both Suteki da Ne and the Hymn of the Fayth for Final Fantasy X.... He was also the scenario writer for much of the Glory of Heracles series and for the adventure mode of the Wii game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Nojima worked for Square Enix until October 2003 and was credited on the following video games during his time as a Square-Enix employee: Since working as a freelancer, he has been credited on the following projects: Nojima also worked on developing the mythology behind the entire Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy series, which serves as the foundation for all stories within the series.

Square Electronic Arts L.L.C., also known as Square EA, was a joint venture between console video game developers Squaresoft and Electronic Arts. Announced on April 27, 1998, Square EA was based in Costa Mesa, California and operated under the supervision of Square president and CEO Jun Iwasaki,... and was responsible for publishing and marketing all games produced by Square in North America. Conversely, Electronic Arts Square, K.K., formed at the same time and based in Japan, was responsible for publishing and marketing games produced by Electronic Arts in Asia. Under the terms of the agreement, Electronic Arts owned 30 percent of Square EA, and Square owned 30 percent of EA Square. Square EA proved to be very successful, and during its five years of existence released a higher proportion of localized Square titles to the American market than ever before. EA Square, on the other hand, was somewhat less successful, and struggled to make an impact on the Asian videogame market, which has been traditionally difficult for American game developers to break into.

Tetsuya Nomura is a Japanese video game director and character designer working for Square Enix , best known for his work on both the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series. Nomura was born in Kōchi, Japan. When he was a young man, he graduated from vocational school with a degree in Graphic... Design. In the early 1990s, Square hired him to work as a debugger for Final Fantasy IV and following it as a monster designer for Final Fantasy V and then as the graphic director in charge of monster designs for Final Fantasy VI. Nomura's most notable work came in 1995, when Square asked him to be the character designer for Final Fantasy VII to replace Yoshitaka Amano. It was a critical and commercial success. In 1998, he worked on both Parasite Eve & Brave Fencer Musashi. In 1997, Nomura worked on Final Fantasy VIII, a game that achieved commercial success, where he returned as the character designer.
