Forever and a Day

Robert Stevenson was an English film writer and director. He was educated at Cambridge University where he became the president of both the Liberal Club and the Cambridge Union Society. He moved to California in the 1940s and ended up directing 19 films for The Walt Disney Company in the 1960s and... 1970s. Today, Stevenson is best remembered for directing the Julie Andrews musical Mary Poppins, for which Andrews won the Academy Award for Best Actress and Stevenson received a nomination for Best Director Oscar. Stevenson divorced his first wife Cecilie and married actress Anna Lee in 1934. They lived on London's Bankside for five years, moving to Hollywood in 1939, where he remained for many years. They had two daughters, Venetia and Caroline, before divorcing in March 1944. He married Frances Holyoke Howard on October 8, 1944; they later divorced. They had one son, Hugh Howard Stevenson. Robert Stevenson's widow, Ursula Henderson, appeared as herself in the documentary Locked in the Tower: The Men behind Jane Eyre in 2007.

Frank Lloyd was a film director, scriptwriter and producer. Lloyd was among the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and its president between 1934 and 1935. Frank Lloyd was Scotland's first Academy Award winner and is unique in film history having received three Oscar... nominations in 1929 for his work on a silent film , a part-talkie and a full talkie . He won for The Divine Lady. He was nominated and won again in 1933 for his adaptation of Noël Coward's Cavalcade and received a further Best Director nomination in 1935 for perhaps his most successful film, Mutiny on the Bounty. In 1957, Lloyd was awarded The George Eastman Award, given by George Eastman House for distinguished contribution to the art of film.

Edmund Goulding was a British film writer and director. As an actor early in his career he was one of the 'Ghosts' in the 1922 British made Paramount silent Three Live Ghosts alongside Norman Kerry and Cyril Chadwick. Also in the early 20s he wrote several screenplays for star Mae Murray and... directed by her then husband Robert Z. Leonard. Goulding is best remembered for directing cultured dramas and such as Love , Grand Hotel with Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford, Dark Victory with Bette Davis, and The Razor's Edge with Gene Tierney and Tyrone Power. He also directed the classic film noir Nightmare Alley with Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell, and the action drama The Dawn Patrol. He was also a successful songwriter, composer, and producer. Before moving to films, Goulding was an actor, playwright and director on the London stage. Interviewed about his Goulding biography Edmund Goulding's Dark Victory , film historian Matthew Kennedy stated: He not only directed many types of films, but he took on multiple functions on each set.

René Clair born René-Lucien Chomette, was a French filmmaker and writer. René Clair was born and grew up in Paris in the district of Les Halles, whose lively and picturesque character made a lasting impression on him. His father was a soap merchant; he had an elder brother, Henri... Chomette . He attended the Lycée Montaigne and the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. In 1914 he was studying philosophy; his friends at that time included Raymond Payelle who became the actor and writer Philippe Hériat. In 1917, at the age of 18, he served as an ambulance driver in World War I, before being invalided out with a spinal injury. He was deeply affected by the horrors of war that he witnessed and gave expression to this in writing a volume of poetry called La Tête de l'homme . Back in Paris after the war, he started a career as a journalist at the left-wing newspaper L'Intransigeant. Having met the music-hall singer Damia and written some songs for her, Clair was persuaded by her to visit Gaumont studios in 1920 where a film was being cast and he then agreed to take on a leading role in Le Lys de la vie.

Victor Saville was an English film director, producer and screenwriter. He directed 39 films between 1927 and 1954. He also produced 36 films between 1923 and 1962. He produced his first film, Woman to Woman, with Michael Balcon in 1923, and on the back of its success produced pictures for the... veteran director Maurice Elvey, including the classic British silent Hindle Wakes . His first picture as director was The Arcadians in 1927. In 1929 he and Michael Balcon worked together again on a talkie remake of Woman to Woman for Balcon's company, Gainsborough Pictures, this time directed by Saville himself. From 1931, as Gainsborough Pictures and the Gaumont British Picture Corporation joined forces, Victor Saville produced a string of comedies, musicals and dramas for Gainsborough and Gaumont-British, including the popular Jessie Matthews pictures. In 1937 he left to set up his own production company, Victor Saville Productions, and made three pictures for Alexander Korda's London Films at Denham studios. Herbert Sydney Wilcox was a British film producer and director. Wilcox's mother was from County Cork, Ireland, but he was born in Norwood and attended school in Brighton. During the First World War, he served in the Royal Flying Corps. He joined the film business in 1919 forming with his war... gratuity his own company Astra Films producing and directing his first film, The Wonderful Story in a makeshift studio in Kew. He formed a company, Graham Wilcox Productions, with Jack Graham Cutts in 1920. He set up the British National Company, which was later absorbed into British International Pictures. He also set up a "British Hollywood" at Elstree Studios. Although Alfred Hitchcock's Blackmail is generally regarded as the first film with sound, Wilcox's Black Waters was trade-shown several weeks earlier. He produced more than a hundred films, of which he directed half. In the 1950s he planned to make a biopic about Van Gogh starring Trevor Howard, but it was never made. "His film production team were never laid off, even during the worst depressions of the British film industry. They were on full salary 52 weeks of the year.

Sir Cedric Webster Hardwicke was a noted English stage and film actor whose career spanned nearly fifty years. Hardwicke's theatre work included notable performances in productions of the plays of William Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw, and his film work included leading roles in a number of... adapted literary classics. Hardwicke was born in Lye, Worcestershire, the son of Jessie and her husband Dr. Edwin Webster Hardwicke. He attended Bridgnorth Grammar School in Shropshire and then trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . In 1928, he married English actress Helena Pickard. Hardwicke's son was the actor Edward Hardwicke, a well-known television actor in the UK. He made his first appearance on stage at London's Lyceum Theatre in 1912 during the run of Frederick Melville's melodrama The Monk and the Woman, when he took up the part of Brother John. During that year he was at Her Majesty's Theatre understudying, and subsequently appeared at the Garrick Theatre in Charles Klein's play Find the Woman, and Trust the People. In 1913 he joined Benson's Company and toured in the provinces, South Africa, and Rhodesia.
