Game Overview

The legendary arcade classic Gauntlet is reborn with a new vision, story and gameplay in Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows. Seeking to undo the past, a powerful emperor is lost in his own dreams and nightmares. After being imprisoned by him for two centuries, four immortal heroes set out to undo their tormentor's lifetime of regrets. In the process, they must deal with the consequences of their own actions and watch as the world shakes apart around them. Seven Sorrows is the fusion of fantasy fighting action with the strategy and fascination of user friendly RPG elements, challenging gamers in sole play, co-op and a thriving online community.

The Good

Co-op play for up to four players.

The Bad

Repetitive hack-and-slash action lacks punch, Bland level design offers no real variety, Short quest can be finished in just a few hours, The four characters all play nearly identically.

The Bottom Line

Centuries ago, four immortal heroes set out to kill the most powerful emperor their age had ever known. They failed, and for their crimes, three were crucified on a great tree at the bottom of the world. Mysteriously set free, the heroes set out to finish what they had started, only to find that they must now save their tormentor from his own dreams and madness. If the ancient heroes cannot undo the emperor's deeds on their own, his mad plans may tear apart the world.

Lead by industry veterans John Romero and Josh Sawyer, Midway's San Diego studio revives the classic adventure with this epic action-RPG. Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows fuses fantasy fighting action with the strategic RPG collecting and customization elements for solo play, co-op and an online community.

Whether you play it alone or with friends, this uninspired update to the '80s swords-and-sorcery arcade dungeon crawl misses the mark with its boring, mindless action and short, forgettable quest.

While there is a certain satisfaction to be had at unleashing 50-hit combos in Seven Sorrows, many people will find the game just too shallow in this day and age. The most enjoyment out of Seven Sorrows will be had playing with friends or online.

Definitely a rental.

If you want an afternoon of thoughtless killing, rent this. Your time can probably be better spent.
