Although a post office was established in May 1884, Gresham was not incorporated as a city until 1905. Lewis Shattuck, son of a pioneer family, was the first mayor. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.2 square miles , of which 22.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The total area is 0.
