Guinea-Bissau, officially the Republic of Guinea-Bissau /ˈɡɪni bɪˈsaʊ/ , is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south and east, with the Atlantic Ocean to its west. It covers 36,125 km² with an estimated population of 1,600,000. Guinea-Bissau was once part of the kingdom of Gabu, as well as part of the Mali Empire. "Esta É a Nossa Pátria Bem Amada" is the national anthem of Guinea-Bissau. Written by Amílcar Cabral and composed by Xiao He, it was adopted upon independence in 1974. It was also the national anthem of Cape Verde until 1996, when a new anthem was chosen by the latter country.
