Hannibal

The Mark Twain Boyhood Home in Hannibal, Missouri was the home of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as author Mark Twain, from 1844 to 1853.

The United States Post Office at Hannibal, Missouri is a federal building previously used as a post office and as a courthouse. It is also known as... the Federal Building or the Naval Reserve Center, and is located at 600 Broadway. The building's architect was Mifflin E. Bell, and it was completed in 1888. The building is an excellent example of a late Second Empire architectural style. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri met in this building until 1960, and the U.S. Circuit Court for that district met here until that court was abolished in 1912. It is now owned by the city.

Cliff Edwards , also known as "Ukelele Ike", was an American singer and voice actor who enjoyed considerable popularity in the 1920s and early 1930s,... specializing in jazzy renditions of pop standards and novelty tunes. He had a number-one hit with "Singin' in the Rain" in 1929. He also did voices for animated cartoons later in his career, and is best known as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney's Pinocchio . Edwards was born Clifton A. Edwards in Hannibal, Missouri. He left school at age 14 and soon moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he entertained as a singer in saloons. As many places had pianos in bad shape or none at all, Edwards taught himself to play ukulele to serve as his own accompanist . He got the nickname "Ukelele Ike" from a club owner who could not remember his name. He got his first break in 1918 at the Arsonia Cafe in Chicago, Illinois, where he performed a tune called "Ja Da", written by the club's pianist, Bob Carleton. Edwards and Carleton made the tune a hit on the vaudeville circuit.

Powers won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 1973 for his critical writing as TV-radio-columnist for Chicago Sun-Times about television during 1972. He was the first television critic to win the Pulitzer Prize. In 1985, Powers won an Emmy Award for his work on CBS News Sunday Morning. Powers was born in 1941 in Hannibal, Missouri — Mark Twain's hometown. Hannibal was influential in much of Powers' writing — as the subject of his book White Town Drowsing, as the location of the two true-life murders that are the subject of Tom and Huck Don't Live Here Anymore, and as the home of Mark Twain.

Gregg Andrews is a professor of history and labor historian at Texas State University. Additionally, he is assistant director of the Center for... Texas Music History and assistant director and co-editor of the Journal of Texas Music History. Andrews is also an accomplished folk musician, performing and recording under the pseudonym "Doctor G" alongside his band, The Mudcats. Andrews was born in Ilasco, Ralls County, Missouri, to Maurice and Virginia Andrews in 1950. He grew up in Monkey Run, an unincorporated neighborhood of Ilasco literally "on the wrong side of the tracks" . A largely immigrant community, Ilasco was a suburb of Hannibal, Missouri, and was also the location of the cave made famous in Mark Twain's classic novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Ilasco had a population of about 3,000 in 1900, but economic changes had greatly decreased the town's size by mid-century. Andrews' father and grandfather both worked at the Atlas Portland Cement Co. plant.
