The Heisman is named for John Heisman, a former Georgia Tech football coach, and is given each year to the most outstanding college player as determined by a voting system. The award is generally given to quarterbacks and running backs, though there have been instances where other positions have received the Heisman. The award was first presented in 1935. Winning this prestigious award is not a guarantee of future success in the professional leagues, but most have gone on to become top draft picks and eight have made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
