Hilo

The Palace Theatre is a movie theatre in downtown Hilo, Hawai'i in the United States of America. Originally built in 1925, the Palace reopened in 1998 as an arthouse.

The Volcano Block Building is a historic structure in Hilo, Hawaii built in 1914. Completed in 1914, this two story commercial building of reinforced... concrete in the Italian Renaissance style is representative of the major structures built in Hilo between 1910 and 1915 as the city grew to be the second largest commercial center in the Hawaiian Islands. Measuring approximately 60 feet by 90 feet and fronting on Waianuenue Avenue, the structure occupies the site of the former Volcano Stables. Three retail spaces on the ground floor each have separate store fronts. The entry stair to the second floor office spaces is located between the first and second retail spaces at the East side. Three separate full basements are located below these spaces. It was the first building built in Hilo to house multiple businesses in the same structure, and the first not constructed for its owner's occupancy. A vault on the ground floor was probably constructed by the first tenant in the space, the Peoples Bank of Hilo when they opened on September 1, 1916. Another notable tenant was the C. Brewer & Co., which had purchased the Pepeekeo Sugar Company in 1904.

Bob Shane is an American singer and guitarist and, with Nick Reynolds' passing in October 2008, the only surviving founding member of The Kingston... Trio. In that capacity, Shane became a seminal figure in the revival of folk and other acoustic music as a popular art form in the U.S. in the late 1950s through the mid 1960s. The success of the Kingston Trio in its heyday had repercussions far beyond its unprecedented album sales , its host of imitators, and the relatively short-lived pop-folk boom it created. For the Kingston Trio's success took acoustic folk-based music out of the niche market it had occupied prior to the Trio's arrival and moved it into the mainstream of American popular music, opening the door for major record labels to record and market both more traditional folk musicians and singer-songwriters as well. Shane was born to a well-established and prosperous family in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii; he is in his own words "a fourth-generation islander.

Herman John Wedemeyer was an American actor, football player, and politician. He is best known for portraying 'Sergeant/Detective "Duke" Lukela' on... the crime drama Hawaii Five-O . Wedemeyer, attended St. Louis School in Honolulu and was a standout in both football and baseball. Wedemeyer, a halfback, played college football for the St. Mary's College Galloping Gaels in Moraga, CA. In 1945, he finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979. Wedemeyer was Hawai'i's first consensus All-American football player. He bore the colorful nicknames 'Squirmin' Herman,' 'The Flyin' Hawaiian,' 'The Hawaiian Centipede,' and 'The Hula-Hipped Hawaiian.' Wedemeyer was a first-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Dons of the All-America Football Conference in 1948. Despite leading the AAFC in punt return yardage that year, he was waived by the Dons. He was then signed by the AAFC Baltimore Colts, with whom he played in 1949 before retiring from professional sports for good.

Kimo Kaulani began working in the music industry in as a keyboardist... for a Capitol Records Recording Artist for 2 years. After leaving Capitol Records, he formed Solopro Music Inc. The company provided production services and songwriting for established and developing artists. In 2000 Kimo Kaulani & Production partner Geri King formed Nuendo Music Group, . Red Skye Records was a record label distributed by Sony Music. The label had several successful releases and artists internationally over its 6 year span. Kimo and his production partner have garnered nominations for a Dove Award, a Grammy Award Nomination, and several International Award nominations. Kimo's accomplishments have been recognized by several of the music industry’s leading software and equipment manufacturing companies such as Steinberg/Yamaha, MXL Microphones, Sony Pictures Digital and M-Audio. Kimo Kaulani also formed Ki 2 Music in 2000 through BMI and in 2010 formed Hilo Boy Music through SESAC as his personal publishing company.

Ray Kinney was a singer, musician, composer, orchestra leader and performer on radio, stage and screen. Kinney was born in Hilo, Hawaii to... Irish-Hawaiian parents William & Pilialoha Kinney. At age 15 he and his six brothers were sent to school in Salt Lake City, Utah. Already skilled on the ukulele and with a fine tenor voice, Ray and his brothers formed their own band and began touring the western US. He returned to Hawaii in 1920 upon the death of his mother. Ray was cast in 1925 as the lead in the opera "Prince of Hawaii" by noted Hawai'ian composer Charles E. King. The opera began touring in California in 1926. In 1928 bandleader Johnny Noble chose Kinney among others to appear on his radio show. The show originated from station KPO in San Francisco and was basically an hour long promotion for Hawai'ian tourism. Later that year Brunswick Records signed Noble, with Kinney as one of the singers, to a contract that resulted in 110 singles being issued.
