Holly Springs is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,957 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. A short drive from Memphis, Tennessee, Holly Springs is the site of a number of well-preserved antebellum houses and other structures and has a strong tradition of historic preservation. Holly Springs is the site of Rust College, a historically black liberal arts college established in 1866 by the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.7 square miles , of which 12.7 square miles is land and 0.04 square miles is water. Holly Springs was founded in 1836, on grounds previously held by Chickasaw Indians. The economic basis of its populace were the neighboring cotton plantations. The next year it was made seat of the newly created county.
