Minato, Tokyo
Minato is one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, Japan. As of 1 March 2008, it had an official population of 217,335 and a density of 10,865 persons per km². The total area is 20.34 km². Minato hosts 49 embassies. It is also home to various companies, including Honda, Mitsubishi... Heavy Industries, Ltd., Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, NEC, Sony, Fujitsu and Toshiba. Minato is located southwest of the Imperial Palace and has boundaries with the special wards of Chiyoda, Chūō, Kōtō , Shinagawa, Shibuya, and Shinjuku. The ward was founded on March 15, 1947 with the merger of Akasaka, Azabu, and Shiba Wards. Minato is governed by mayor Masaaki Takei, an Independent supported by all major parties except the Japanese Communist Party. The city legislative assembly has 51 members and is dominated by the Liberal Democratic Party. The city's public elementary and junior high schools are operated by the Minato City Board of Education . Mita Junior High School opened in 2001 after the merger of Minato Junior High School and Shibahama Junior High School were merged.
