Huntington Station is a hamlet in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 29,910 at the 2000 census. Huntington Station is a community in the Town of Huntington. It was named for its railroad station, and was originally known as "Fairground." Huntington Station was also the birthplace of poet Walt Whitman. His home remains there as a museum. Across from the museum on Rt 110 is Walt Whitman Shops. Huntington Station is located at 40°50′41″N 73°24′27″W / 40.844698°N 73.407416°W / 40.844698; -73.407416.... According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.4 square miles , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 29,910 people, 9,731 households, and 7,191 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,507.1 per square mile . There were 10,028 housing units at an average density of 1,846.4/sq mi . The racial makeup of the CDP was 71.55% White, 11.56% African American, 0.35% Native American, 3.09% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 10.04% from other races, and 3.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.74% of the population.
