Includes liner notes by Mort Goode. There are a number of excellent entry points into the singular career of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, of which this collection is one (another fine one is VOODOO JIVE: THE BEST OF SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS). Over the course of these dozen songs, it becomes clear that no one genre was enough to contain Hawkins. A blues and R&B foundation anchors many of the songs, but just as many have a dramatic cabaret feel. Hawkins is most well known for the haunting title track, but he could also turn faux-operatic with a number like Cole Porter's "I Love Paris." Hawkins presented a hybrid style that was tied to his unique personality and mannerisms; he is a category unto himself.
