Minor Threat was an American hardcore punk band, formed in Washington, D.C. in 1980 and disbanded in 1983. The band was relatively short-lived, but... had a strong influence on the hardcore punk scene, both stylistically and in establishing a "do it yourself" ethic for music distribution and concert promotion. Minor Threat's song "Straight Edge" became the eventual basis of the straight edge movement, while the band often professed their own "straight edge" ideals. Allmusic described Minor Threat's music as "iconic," and noted that their groundbreaking music "has held up better than [that of] most of their contemporaries." Along with the fellow Washington, D.C. hardcore band Bad Brains and California band Black Flag, Minor Threat set the standard for many hardcore punk bands in the 1980s and 1990s. All of Minor Threat's recordings were released on Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson's own label, Dischord Records. The Minor Threat EP and their only full-length studio album Out of Step have received a number of accolades and are cited as landmarks of the hardcore punk genre. Skewbald / Grand Union, , was a short-lived hardcore punk band from Washington, D.C. founded by former Minor Threat members Ian MacKaye and Jeff... Nelson. Skewbald/Grand Union recorded three songs in November, 1981, during Minor Threat's hiatus. They were finally released on MacKaye and Nelson's record label Dischord Records, in January, 1992. The band consisted of Ian MacKaye on vocals , guitarist Eddie Janney , bassist John Falls, and drummer Jeff Nelson. Their songs can be found on an eponymous one-sided 7" EP, Dischord #50, and on the 3-cd compilation album 20 Years of Dischord. The band's strange name is a result of a dispute between founding members Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson. The band was initially named "Grand Union," after a nearby grocery store. MacKaye then found the word "skewbald" in a dictionary, and thought it was a better name. Nelson, however, still preferred Grand Union. The two were unable to favor either title, and compromised by giving the band both names.

Egg Hunt was a one-off band/project of long time friends and musicians Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, former singer and drummer of the hardcore punk... band Minor Threat, respectively. During a 1986 trip to England's Southern Studios to discuss possible European distribution of Dischord releases with owner John Loder, the three decided to make a record together, and the project was dubbed "Egg Hunt" for festive reasons . John took a seat in the producer's chair, while Ian and Jeff handled all the instruments. Egg Hunt's only release, a self-titled 7", was, according to reviewer Ron DePasquale, an example of "experimental, post-hardcore" music. The song "We All Fall Down," appearing on the second side, was a song that Ian had originally written for his earlier band, Embrace, but it was discarded by that band. Although seemingly a small release in comparison to Dischord's significant catalog, this record is still a notable example of MacKaye and Nelson's songwriting abilities, as well as their chemistry together as artists. They liked the project so much that they tried turning Egg Hunt into an actual band after returning to Washington, DC.
