Ignacio Ramonet is a Spanish journalist and writer. He was the editor-in-chief of Le Monde diplomatique from 1991 until March 2008. An editorial published by Ramonet on December 1997 in this magazine resulted in the launching of ATTAC. In addition, Ramonet is one of the founders of the NGO Media Watch Global, and currently he is president of this organization. Ramonet also frequently contributes to El País and participates in an advisory council to Telesur. Ramonet grew up in Tangier. He studied engineering at Bordeaux, Rabat and Paris, and he has been professor at Université... Paris-VII. Ignacio Ramonet participated in the Stock Exchange of Visions project in 2007. Ramonet calls it a betrayal of socialism that some social democrat parties have chosen the third way between socialism and capitalism. The NGO Reporters without Borders had written about Ramonet's strong relationship with Fidel Castro. Ramonet denied this claim in 2002. In May 2004, Ramonet supported Castro in a direct television interview when Castro protested about the Forbes Magazine's list of country leaders wealth. Castro was number 7 on the list.
