Hans Hollein, is an Austrian architect and designer. Hollein achieved a diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1956, then attended the... Illinois Institute of Technology in 1959 and the University of California, Berkeley in 1960. He has worked for various agencies in Sweden and in America before returning to Vienna, founding his own agency in 1964. In 1985 Hollein was awarded the Pritzker Prize. In 1963/64 and 1966 Hollein was a guest professor in the Washington University in St. Louis. In 1967-76 he was professor in the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. Since 1976 he was professor of the "Universität für angewandte Kunst" in Vienna. Hollein works mainly as an architect, but has also established himself as a designer for the Memphis Group and Alessi. He also staged exhibitions, e. g. for the Biennale in Venice. In 1980 he designed the stage for a production of Arthur Schnitzler's drama Komödie der Verführung at Vienna's Burgtheater.

Grote Reber was an amateur astronomer and pioneer of radio astronomy. He was instrumental in investigating and extending Karl Jansky's pioneering... work, and conducted the first sky survey in the radio frequencies. His 1937 radio antenna was the second ever to be used for astronomical purposes and the first parabolic reflecting antenna to be used as a "radio telescope". For nearly a decade he was the world's only radio astronomer. Reber was born and raised in Wheaton, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, and graduated from Armour Institute of Technology in 1933 with a degree in electrical engineering. He was an amateur radio operator , and worked for various radio manufacturers in Chicago from 1933 to 1947. When he learned of Karl Jansky's work in 1933, he decided this was the field he wanted to work in, and applied to Bell Labs, where Jansky was working. However this was during the height of the Great Depression and there were no jobs available. In the summer of 1937, Reber decided to build his own radio telescope in his back yard in Wheaton.

Samuel Karlin was an American mathematician at Stanford University in the late 20th century. Karlin was born in Yanova, Poland and immigrated to... Chicago as a child. Raised in an Orthodox Jewish household, Karlin became an atheist in his teenage years and remained an atheist for the rest of his life. Karlin earned his undergraduate degree from Illinois Institute of Technology; and then his doctorate in mathematics from Princeton University in 1947 under the supervision of Salomon Bochner. He was on the faculty of Caltech from 1948–56, before becoming a professor of mathematics and statistics at Stanford. Throughout his career, Karlin made fundamental contributions to the fields of mathematical economics, bioinformatics, game theory, evolutionary theory, biomolecular sequence analysis, and total positivity. He did extensive work in mathematical population genetics. In the early 1990s, Karlin and Stephen Altschul developed the Karlin-Altschul statistics, a basis for the highly used sequence similarity software program BLAST. Karlin authored ten books and more than 450 articles.

Leon Max Lederman is an American experimental physicist and Nobel Prize in Physics laureate for his work with neutrinos. He is Director Emeritus of... Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, USA. He founded the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, in Aurora, Illinois in 1986, and has served in the capacity of Resident Scholar since 1998. Lederman graduated from the James Monroe High School in the South Bronx. He received his bachelor's degree from the City College of New York in 1943, and received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1951. He then joined the Columbia faculty and eventually became Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics. He took an extended leave of absence from Columbia in 1979 to become Fermilab's director. He resigned from Columbia and Fermilab in 1989 and taught briefly at the University of Chicago before moving to Illinois Institute of Technology, where he currently serves as the Pritzker Professor of Science. In 1991, Lederman became President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Lederman is also one of the main proponents of the "Physics First" movement.

Herbert Alexander Simon was an American political scientist, economist, sociologist, and psychologist, and professor—most notably at Carnegie... Mellon University—whose research ranged across the fields of cognitive psychology, cognitive science, computer science, public administration, economics, management, philosophy of science, sociology, and political science. With almost a thousand very highly cited publications, he is one of the most influential social scientists of the 20th century. Simon was among the founding fathers of several of today's important scientific domains, including artificial intelligence, information processing, decision-making, problem-solving, attention economics, organization theory, complex systems, and computer simulation of scientific discovery. He coined the terms bounded rationality and satisficing, and was the first to analyze the architecture of complexity and to propose a preferential attachment mechanism to explain power law distributions. He also received many top-level honors later in life.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect. He is commonly referred to, and was addressed, as Mies, his surname. Along with Walter... Gropius, Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, he is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. Mies, like many of his post-World War I contemporaries, sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He created an influential twentieth century architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity. His mature buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces. He strived towards an architecture with a minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of free-flowing open space. He called his buildings "skin and bones" architecture. He sought a rational approach that would guide the creative process of architectural design. He is often associated with the aphorisms "less is more" and "God is in the details".
