J Mascis Filmography

Deep Wound was a hardcore punk band formed in 1982 in Westfield, MA. They released one self-titled 7" and contributed two songs to the compilation... LP, Bands That Could Be God, both of which are sought after by fans and record collectors alike. In the early 1980s, J Mascis and Deep Wound vocalist Charlie Nakajima lived in Amherst, MA, and attended the same high school. In 1982, guitarist Lou Barlow met Scott Helland at the Oi! singles bin in a local record shop. Soon after, Scott posted a flier looking for musicians who were influenced by bands such as Anti-Pasti and Discharge. Mascis responded to the ad and was driven by his father to Lou Barlow's place in Westfield, MA for an audition. Although the band already had a singer, Mascis convinced them to replace him with Charlie, and Deep Wound's line-up was complete. The band quickly recorded a demo cassette and began to play shows in Boston with local hardcore bands such as SSD, The F.U.'s, Jerry's Kids, etc. and often opened for hardcore punk bands playing in Western MA.

Ciccone Youth is an experimental band which was formed in 1986. It is a side project of Sonic Youth members Steve Shelley, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo,... and Thurston Moore, with Minutemen/fIREHOSE member Mike Watt. The band's name is a play on the names "Sonic Youth" and "Ciccone", the original surname of pop singer Madonna. While the band has never performed live, they have released two records. The first was released on New Alliance Records in 1986, and consisted of three tracks: "Into the Groove" and the short "Tuff Titty Rap" on the A side , and "Burnin' Up" on the B side. The second record was a full-length album called The Whitey Album on Blast First Records in 1988, incorporating the previously released 3 tracks. It was rumored they were going to cover every song from The Beatles' White Album, but actually only recorded three cover songs by other artists: "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer , and "Burnin' Up" and "Into the Groove" by Madonna.

Dinosaur Jr. is an American alternative rock band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1984. Originally called Dinosaur, prior to legal issues that... forced the group to change their name, the band disbanded in 1997 until reuniting in 2005. Guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph were the band's founding and current members; Mascis has been the group's sole continuous member. Their distinct sound, characterized by high gain, extensive use of feedback and distortion, and frontman J Mascis's melodic guitar solos, was highly influential in the alternative rock movement of the 1990s. Mascis and Barlow had previously played together in a hardcore punk band called Deep Wound, formed in 1982 while the pair were attending high school in western Massachusetts. After high school, they began exploring slower yet still aggressive music such as Black Sabbath, The Replacements, and Neil Young. Mascis' college friend Gerard Cosloy introduced him to bands like Dream Syndicate, which Mascis in turn showed to Barlow. Barlow explained, "We loved speed metaland we loved wimpy-jangly stuff". Deep Wound broke up in mid-1984.
