In 2004, Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. was spun off as a separate company. Jackson Hewitt was founded in 1982 by former H&R Block employee John Hewitt. After working in the tax preparation industry for 13 years, he came to the conclusion that tax preparation process could be improved by using computers, and so worked with his father to design a program that streamlined the client interview process. But he was unable to sell it.
