The Southern Ocean is defined by Australia as all the ocean south of Australia, extending to Antarctica. Other countries describe some of that water as either the Indian Ocean or Pacific Ocean, with the Southern Ocean only the part closest to Antarctica . Australia defines the open waters south of... the continent as the Southern Ocean. Both Geoscience Australia and the Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic Service online gazetteers represent the Southern Ocean close to the mainland. Since 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization has defined the "Southern Ocean" as those waters surrounding Antarctica south of the 60° S circle of latitude, and this definition is widely applied to the name. Formally, however, the IHO do not yet recognise the name, as the 2000 decision to reinstate it is still awaiting ratification. Australia has lodged a reservation to the definition. The CIA World Fact Book mistakenly identified the water south of Australia as the South Pacific Ocean on one of its primary reference maps.

Falmouth is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States; Barnstable County is coextensive with Cape Cod. The population was 31,531 at the 2010 census. Today Falmouth is well known for it's warm water beaches, a traditional Main Street village with eclectic boutiques, trendy... restaurants and historic village green. Visitors to Martha's Vineyard come to Falmouth to utilize the terminal for the Steamship Authority ferries to Martha's Vineyard in the village of Woods Hole which also boasts several scientific organizations such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, The Marine Biological Laboratory and the Woods Hole Research Center, National Marine Fisheries Aquarium and various museums of the scientific institutions. Martha's Vineyard is an island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, known for being an affluent summer colony. Often called just "The Vineyard," the island has a land area of 87.48 square miles and is the 58th largest island in the United States, and the third largest on the East Coast of... the United States. It is also the largest island not connected to mainland by a bridge or tunnel on the East Coast of the United States. It is located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as a part of Dukes County, which also includes Cuttyhunk and the other Elizabeth Islands, as well as the island of Nomans Land, which is both a US Wildlife preserve, as well as a US Naval practice bombing range which continues to be controversial. The Vineyard was also home to one of the earliest known deaf communities in the United States; consequently, a special sign language, Martha's Vineyard Sign Language , developed on the island. The estimated year-round population is 15,000 residents; however, the summer population can swell to over 75,000 people.
