Jay Robinson Racing
About Jay Robinson Racing
The Jay Robinson Racing Team, established in 1995, has competed in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series since 2000. The team currently consists of Kenny Wallace in car #28, sponsored by the United States Border Patrol, and Mark Green in car #49, usually sponsored by GetMoreVacations.com.
The Cars
Car #28, a Chevrolet Impala SS, started its Nationwide Series racing career in 2004 with Yahoo! as its primary sponsor, and finished 35th in the Charter 250, a Nationwide Series race. In 2005, car #28 found new sponsors in RadioShack and Motorola, and performed poorly. Car #28 was driven in six races in 2006. but still failed to finisher higher than 36th. Car #28’s fortunes turned around in 2007 when the Jay Robinson Racing Team acquired the assets of Haas CNC Racing and was able to run car #28 full time. In 2008, Kenny Wallace got his chance to drive car #28 and succeeded in driving to the car’s best ever finish, third place at Memphis Motorsports Park.
Car #49 was the first car raced by Jay Robinson Racing in 2000. Driver Rodney Childers had a wreck during this first race at the Myrtle Beach Speedway. 2001 was a better year for car #49 and its drivers when Andy Kirby finished 16th in the NASCAR Subway 300. In 2002, Andy Kirby raced until the Kroger 300 race, but was killed in a motorcycle accident shortly after. In 2003, Jay Robinson Racing had two drivers assigned to car #49, but neither worked out. One of those drivers hired in 2003 and released by Jay Robinson Racing, Derrike Cope, reappeared with car #49 in 2008. 2009 started with Kertus Davis behind the wheel, but was later replaced by Mark Green. Mark Green remains the driver for the Chevy Impala #49.
Start and Park Teams
Car #49 is known as a “start and park” team. Start and park teams in NASCAR are teams that start races but pull out before the race is over. The logic of this practice is that it saves money because a car doesn’t complete a full race and therefore avoids all the costs of replacing parts like tires during the course of a race. By participating for a short time, cars still qualify for some earnings. Many claim that Jay Robinson Racing uses this technique with car #49 to raise money to use for its car #28.
The Drivers
With drivers looking to hook up with cars and cars needing drivers, there is a lot of turnover in the racing circuit. The Jay Robinson Racing team is no exception, and the team has seen its fair share of drivers in the past. Mark Green, Shane Hall, Derrike Cope, Robert Richardson and Blake Bjorklund have all taken their turns as drivers for car #28. Car #49 has had even more drivers since it started its run in 2000 including Kenny Wallace, Rodney Childers, Andy Kirby and Steve Grissom (who finished sixteenth at Talladega).
