Child Rebel Soldier, shortened CRS, is a hip hop supergroup composed of hip hop artists Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and Pharrell Williams. Child Rebel... Soldier was conceived with the conception of the song "Us Placers", which appears on Kanye West's Can't Tell Me Nothing mixtape, released just prior to his third studio album Graduation. Lupe Fiasco had produced the song in an attempt to construct a mashup mixtape containing hip hop remakes of alternative rock singer Thom Yorke's solo album, The Eraser coupled with a few Radiohead songs. He originally wanted Kanye West and English rapper The Streets to appear on the mixtape's first song "Us Placers", but Skinner failed to respond while West sent the song over to Pharrell Williams after laying down a verse. After finishing the collaboration, the trio decided to form a group, named by Pharrell as "Child Rebel Soldier". Their first song, "Us Placers", was listed at #43 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007. In an 2007 interview with Billboard, Lupe elaborated that the three had hopes to find time to construct a full-length studio album, saying, "Now [our labels are] working it out.

GOOD Music is an American record label founded by rapper and producer Kanye West in 2004. "GOOD" is an acronym for "Getting Out Our Dreams". In early recording days of West, GLC and Really Doe, all three belonged to a group The Go-Getters. Although none of them have an album under the label, West... releasing his own albums with Roc-A-Fella, whilst GLC and Really Doe left the label in later years. John Legend and Common were the first to have albums produced under GOOD Music and between them received seven Grammy Award nominations. Get Lifted with three and Be with four. Over the years there has been confusion as to what the company actually is. GLC was quoted as saying that it "isn't a label", but that it is "a family and like a production company". With only Kanye West, John Legend, Common, GLC and Really Doe signed, Kanye signed his first cousin Tony Williams to GOOD Music to help give him a buzz. In 2004, rapper Consequence released his mixtape, Take 'Em to the Cleaners, which would find its way into the hands of Kanye West after this West offered him a guest spot on his debut album The College Dropout, he went on to appear on West's second album.

Rhythm and blues, often abbreviated to R&B, is a genre of popular African-American music that originated in the 1940s. The term was originally... used by record companies to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at a time when "urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming more popular. The term has subsequently had a number of shifts in meaning. In the early 1950s, the term rhythm and blues was frequently applied to blues records. Starting in the mid-1950s, after this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll, the term "R&B" became used to refer to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music. By the 1970s, rhythm and blues was used as a blanket term for soul and funk. In the 1980s, a newer style of R&B developed, becoming known as "Contemporary R&B". Jerry Wexler of Billboard magazine coined the term "rhythm and blues" in 1948 as a musical marketing term in the United States. It replaced the term "race music", which originally came from within the black community, but was deemed offensive in the postwar world.
