The University of Oklahoma is a coeducational public research university located in Norman, Oklahoma. Founded in 1890, it existed in Oklahoma Territory near Indian Territory for 17 years before the two became the state of Oklahoma. Employing nearly 3,000 faculty members, the school offers 152 baccalaureate programs, 160 master's programs, 75 doctorate programs, and 20 majors at the first professional level. David Lyle Boren, a former U.S. Senator and Oklahoma Governor, has served as President of the University of Oklahoma since 1994. The school is ranked first per capita among public universities in enrollment of National Merit Scholars and among the top ten in the graduation of Rhodes Scholars. PC Magazine and the Princeton Review rated it one of the "20 Most Wired Colleges" in both 2006 and 2008, while the Carnegie Foundation classifies it as a research university with "very high research activity." Okmulgee is a city in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population at the 2010 census was 12,321 a loss of 5.4 percent since the 2000 census figure of 13,022. It has been the capital of the Muscogee Nation since the United States Civil War. Okmulgee means "boiling waters" in the Creek... language. The site was chosen because of the nearby rivers and springs. The town is notable as the seat of the Muscogee Nation Tribal Complex. Okmulgee was founded in 1868, when the Creek Nation began restoring order after the Civil War. In 1869, a post office was established, with Captain Frederick B. Severs as the first postmaster. The Creeks initially built a two-story log council house to serve as their capital. This building burned in 1878 and was replaced with a stone building that stands today. The name of the post office was officially changed to the present spelling on November 15, 1883. The St. Louis, Oklahoma and Southern Railway (later absorbed by the Frisco railroad arrived in 1900 and triggered a building boom. By the time of statehood in 1907, the town had 2,322 residents had had been named the seat of Okmulgee County.
