The Intergovernmental Authority on Development is an eight-country regional development organization in East Africa. Its headquarters are located... in Djibouti City. Recurring and severe droughts and other natural disasters between 1974 and 1984 caused widespread famine, ecological degradation and economic hardship in the Horn of Africa region. Although individual countries took substantial measures to cope with the problems and received support from the international community, its extent argued strongly for a regional approach to supplement national efforts. The six countries of the region took action through the United Nations to establish an intergovernmental body for development and drought control in their region. At a January 1986 assembly of heads of state and government, an agreement was signed which officially launched the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development . Soon after its formation the mandate of IGADD widened, becoming a vehicle for regional security and political dialogue.

The African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States is a group of countries , created by the Georgetown Agreement in 1975. The group's main... objectives are sustainable development and poverty reduction within its member states, as well as their greater integration into the world's economy. All of the member states, except Cuba are signatories to the Cotonou Agreement with the European Union. The Cotonou Agreement is the successor to the Lomé Conventions. One of the major differences from the Lomé Convention is that the partnership is extended to new actors such as civil society, private sector, trade unions and local authorities. These will be involved in consultations and planning of national development strategies, provided with access to financial resources and involved in the implementation of programmes. Many small island developing states are ACP states; the fourth Lomé Convention was revised in 1995 in Mauritius and gives special attention to island countries in this agreement.

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, is a free trade area with nineteen member states stretching from Libya to Zimbabwe. COMESA formed... in December 1994, replacing a Preferential Trade Area which had existed since 1981. Nine of the member states formed a free trade area in 2000 , with Rwanda and Burundi joining the FTA in 2004 and the Comoros and Libya in 2006. COMESA is one of the pillars of the African Economic Community. In 2008, COMESA agreed to an expanded free-trade zone including members of two other African trade blocs, the East African Community and the Southern Africa Development Community .

The Group comprises the African Development Bank , the African Development Fund , and the Nigeria Trust Fund . AfDB provides loans and grants to African governments and private companies investing in the regional member countries in Africa. It is owned and funded by member governments, and has a public-interest mandate to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development. Following the end of colonial period in Africa, growing desire for more unity within the continent led to the establishment of two draft charters, one for the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity , and for a regional development bank. A draft accord was submitted to top African officials, then to African Ministers, before being cosigned by twenty-three African governments on August 4, 1963, in the form of an agreement establishing the African Development Bank.

Strathmore University is a private university based in Nairobi, Kenya. Strathmore College was started in 1961, as an Advanced level sixth form... College offering science and arts subjects, by a group of professionals who formed a charitable educational trust . Saint Josemaría Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei, inspired and encouraged them to start the College. Strathmore has a particularly successful accounting program: 60% of the CPA finalists in Kenya coming from it in the past ten years, dating back from 2007. The current Vice-Chancellor of the University is Professor John Odhiambo. In March 1966, the first intake of 25 Accountancy students joined the sixth form students, and began preparing for the examinations of the UK-based Association of Chartered Certified Accountants . These first Accountancy students were sponsored by Shell East Africa, British American Tobacco Kenya and the East African Breweries. In October 1982, the College began evening courses in Accountancy after normal working hours, with 60 students sponsored by various companies.

Peter Gerald Hain is a British Labour Party politician, who has been the Member of Parliament for the Welsh constituency of Neath since 1991, and... has served in the Cabinets of both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, firstly as Leader of the House of Commons under Blair and both Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Secretary of State for Wales under Brown. He resigned from ministerial office over the failure to declare donations to his campaign for the Deputy Leadership of the Labour Party in 2008. He is currently Shadow Welsh Secretary. He came to the UK from South Africa as a teenager, and was a noted anti-apartheid campaigner in the 1970s. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the ill-fated Alternative Vote system campaign in May 2011, together with his close friend and fellow ex-Young Liberal Richard Burden, M.P. Hain was born in the Kenya Colony, but moved to the Union of South Africa about a year later. His parents were anti-apartheid activists in the Liberal Party of South Africa, for which they were made "banned persons", briefly jailed, and prevented from working.

Kiran Shah is an actor and a stuntman. Shah was born in Nairobi, Kenya. He lived in Kenya until he was twelve years old, when he moved to India with... his family. While living in India, he became interested in films, and when his family moved to London, he became involved in the show business. His first film was the 1977 movie Candleshoe, as a stand-in for a girl called Sara Tamakuni, and when stunt coordinator Bob Anderson asked him to do her stunts as well, his career was started. Kiran is often confused with Deep Roy; they are both dwarf Kenyan actors of Indian descent who got their starts in film and television in the late 70s.

Mark Ford is a British poet. He went to school in London, and attended Oxford University and, as a Kennedy Scholar, Harvard University. He studied... for his doctorate at Oxford University on the poetry of John Ashbery, and has published widely on nineteenth- and twentieth-century American writing, including on Raymond Roussel. From 1991-1993 he was Visiting Lecturer at Kyoto University in Japan. He is Professor of English in the Department of English Language and Literature at University College London. He is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books, Times Literary Supplement, and the London Review of Books. Helen Vendler compared him with John Ashbery.

Simon Henry King OBE is a British television presenter and cameraman, specialising in nature documentaries. King has been working in the field of... natural history film making for over 30 years. He has credited his media career to his parents, his father being in the television industry and his mother being involved in the music industry. He began his career as a child actor at the age of ten in such films as The Fox and Secret Place. In 1976 he accompanied naturalist Mike Kendall in the BBC series Man and Boy, in which they searched the country for Britain's wildlife. King was born in Nairobi, Kenya to parents John King and Eve King . His father worked with the British Forces Broadcasting Service in Nairobi and later created and produced the antiques programme Going for a Song. They moved to Bristol in the United Kingdom in 1964. when John got a job as a reporter for the BBC's Points West news programme. When his parents separated when he was just nine years old, he lived with his mother and elder sister, Debbie King attended Henbury School from 1974 to 1979.

The name Tanzania derives from the names of the two states Tanganyika and Zanzibar that united in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which later the same year was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania.

Uganda , officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. Uganda is also known as the "Pearl of Africa". The internationally recognized Transitional Federal Government controls only a small part of the country. Somalia has been characterized as a failed state and is one of the poorest and most violent states in the world. Somalia lies in the eastern-most part of Africa. It is bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Kenya to the southwest, the Gulf of Aden with Yemen to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Ethiopia to the west. It has the longest coastline on the continent, and its terrain consists mainly of plateaus, plains and highlands. Hot conditions prevail year-round, along with periodic monsoon winds and irregular rainfall.
