The Allied siege of La Rochelle occurred during the Second World War in 1944–45, when Allied troops invaded France. La Rochelle was an... important German base on the Atlantic, especially a major submarine base from where U-Boat campaigns were launched. Until the end of the war, La Rochelle was, with other harbours such as Royan or Saint-Nazaire, one of the remaining "Atlantic pockets" occupied by the Germans, which had been bypassed by the main thrust of the Allied invasion. On the North Sea, Dunkirk was similarly bypassed. The city was only liberated at the very end of the war, nine months after the Liberation of Paris, after the general German capitulation on 8 May 1945. The "pocket" of La Rochelle was a zone extending to a distance of about 10 kilometers around La Rochelle, reinforced by an anti-tank trench. After the allied landing in Normandy in June 1944, a large number of German troops had regrouped in the area. The allied siege of the pocket of La Rochelle lasted from September 1944 to May 1945, without heavy bombardment.

The Battle of Rooiwal was an engagement of the Second Boer War. It took place on 11 April 1902 and resulted in a victory by a British force commanded... by Colonel Robert Kekewich over a Boer commando led by Generals Ferdinandus Jacobus Potgieter and Jan Kemp. The action consisted of a Boer attack on horseback on an entrenched British hillside position in the valley of Rooiwal, near Klerksdorp in the Western Transvaal. The Boers were attempting to break out of a British encircling manoeuvre. Their attack was repulsed at some cost to the Boers in killed and injured. This was the end of the war in the Western Transvaal and also the last major battle of the Anglo-Boer War. By 1902, there were roughly 3,000 Boer guerrillas operating in Western Transvaal. There were three separate Boer commandos under the overall command of De La Rey. By this time, many Boer fighters had surrendered and some were now working for the British as scouts. Those who remained in the field were referred to as, 'bitter-einders'. Their situation was very difficult as the British had stripped the veld of food and supplies and had systematically burned Boer farms and homes to deny the guerrillas shelter.

The capture of Tientsin gave the Eight-Nation Alliance a base to launch a rescue mission for the foreign nationals besieged in the Legation Quarter of Peking Tientsin, in 1900, was a city consisting of two adjacent, but very different sub-divisions. To the northwest was the original, ancient walled city, one mile square. Southeast, along the Hai River, was the treaty port and foreign settlements. About one million Chinese lived within the walls or in satellite communities outside the wall. In the foreign settlements 700 foreign civilians, mostly European merchants and missionaries, resided along with tens of thousands of Chinese servants, employees, and businessmen. Among the civilians living in the foreign settlement were Herbert Hoover, a future President of the United States, and his wife Lou Henry Hoover.
